question about changing drilling to get more fingers on ball
« on: January 29, 2009, 12:53:38 PM »
i have a small hand and have always jammed thumb in ball. i just realized by accident tonite that my fingernails are what tend to touch ball more than pads of fingers. if i back out thumb a little and knuckle thumb so to speak all of a sudden i get thumb out rapidly and lift with fingers which actually makes my ball hook which barring dry boards it has never done. i may not be pdw or tommy jones but the difference is like nite and day. i don't think knuckling is the way to consistency. how should my drilling change to make clean thumb clearing and get fingers on ball?

It possibly sounds like your span may be a little long.  If you find yourself having to pull your thumb out to make more contact with the pads of your fingers that is.  You also shouldn't have to knuckle up the thumb to hang onto a ball if drilled at the proper span and size (or utilize tape to snug if necessary).

The other times I've seen this is when a bowler places too much emphasis on thumb pressure to hold a ball.  The span may not be too long but trying to bury your thumb or using your thumb more to hang onto the ball can cause this as well.

Here's the test, place your thumb in the ball and extend your hand over the finger holes, now relax your hand a little.  The edge of your finger grips (or holes if no grips) should be between your first and second joints of your finger.  If it is closer to the first joint, the span is reading long.

If your spans are OK, you probably need more reverse pitch in the fingers.  A good fitter will check your joint flexibility to see.  --  JohnP
