Ok, hopefully easy question in the hopefully right forum...

I have a Dremel. I'd like to add the right accessories to have the ability to attach a sanding disc and do minor widening as done in pro shops. I can't seem to find a long enough extension rod, and not completely sure about the sanding discs, although I do see 1-1/4 inch options on Ebay.

Does anyone else use a Dremel for this? Can you tell me where to find a long enough extension rod and discs?

Nothing to do with the pads, but dremels operate at a much higher RPM than the bevel sanders Pro Shops use, therefore making it much harder to just open up a hole a little bit, a couple of my friends have tried the dremel and ended up buying themselves bevel sanders after their experiences.

Bevel Sanders are relatively inexpensive. Buddiesproshop.com has them for $85 free shipping and Bowlingindex.com has them for $89 + shipping. I found one on ebay a few years ago and only spent $45 for it and it still works flawlessly today.

Lefty, take some good advice. On all the newer balls you are dealing with a "soft" core and a hard shell. Any kind of electric sander with a patch on the end is the perfect tool for gouging out the soft core before you can cut the shell. The best thing to use for "minor" sanding is some sticky back sandpaper, fine and medium. Get a piece of dowell rod that will go into your thumbhole with a bit to spare. Wrap a piece of the sandpaper around it and sand in and out. Keep the rod parallel with the sides of the hole.

they sale dremels with speed settings. I had one and use it. I have a 4" shaft that I screw the sanding disks to the end. Was using it for the last 4 years. It finally bit the dust, as it was no biggie, spent $19 on it. Now I use the RotoZip I had laying around, set at the lowest rpm and am having no issues with it either. I use it only because I haven't had time to hit Lowes, Home Depot, or Harbor freight to find another.

Gunny, I went all thru Home Depot looking at every Dremel accessory and couldn't find a 4 inch shaft. Where did you pick yours up?

You can pick up a 2 speed Dremel at Hell-Mart for under $20, rechargable battery pack will last several year. I keep one in my bowling accessory kit. The 4" rod wasn't hard to find. They also sell Dremel's that have 4-2A batteries in them for crafts or golf club cleaning. This way you can carry batteries instead of re-charging the pack.

If you cut up a worn out 500-1000 Aberlon pad into a round shape and cut into the sides to allow it to bend/flex in the hole like the sanding disks do you'll have an excellent finish pad for light cleaning or a finishing touch to any sanding that was done.

Thanks for the replies. Don, if you can point me towards that 4 inch shaft, I would appreciate it. It may be right in front of me somewhere, but I sure have not been able to find it.

I did look at the flex shaft a few days ago. I almost bought it, but I think that in the end it will still be not quite the right solution. I'm still debating that one however. Maybe it is narrow enough that it actually will do the job. I may have to reconsider.

I'll double check on the exact size of the shaft on the mandrel I'm using. It could be a 3" after thinking about it but whatever the longest mandrel was on the display rack at Lowes or other hardware store is what I picked up. Here is the address to the Dremel accessories http://www.dremel.com/en-us/Accessories/Pages/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=402 , it is listed as a 402 Mandrel. Whatever the length this will get far enough into the thumb hole to remove material to the length of your thumb.

I have also used a home made mandrel by using a length of threaded shaft. You can either use treaded material or take a 3 1/2 or 4" machine bolt and run your sandpaper down the shaft and secure it with a small washer and nut. Insert the threaded shaft into the collet. It will also work but it's a little harder to change out the sandpaper disks.

One last suggestion is to invest in a scraper tool to remove material from the thumb slug. This will minimize the need for the dremel and you can use the dremel as a finish tool and not rely on it being the main removal tool.

Don, you are correct. That is the shaft I picked up. I just pulled mine off the RotoZip, and it is 3". I thought it was 4", my bad, I had bought it a few years ago. But the link shows the exact same one as I have. When I measure from the end of the shaft to past the collet on the dremel it measures just over 4". The collet is small enough to fit inside the thumb hole, unless you have a really small thumb. But it should be plenty to reach the depth you need.

I'll head to Lowes in the AM to see what I can find. If not there, I'll order the 402. Thanks guys! Since my Dremel is single speed though, I think ikt's time to upgrade...

Checked out my mandrel last night, it's only 2" but will do the job. I guess it just looks bigger?
