Somebody here was selling an attachment that turned it into a bevel sander, you don't really need one however. Take the small drum sander that came with the dremel. Remove the little screw on the bottom and attach a piece of sandpaper and replace the screw. It works pretty good for light duty sanding.

I wouldn't use a dremel if I were you!

Ive seen the hack jobs that people have brought in from trying to use a dremel or hand drill to open the thumb. lets just say, 90% of them need new slugs LOL.

I tried finding pics on this computer from customers who used a dremel. The problem lies in how many RPMs spin as opposed to a standard bevel sander, and its not so easy on and off.

With the right attachment, proper sandpaper and variable speed dremel it works great. I've done it for years without a problem.

I'm not saying it couldn't work, but it isn't a bright idea.

I'm sure someone could mount tires using a flat head and a hammer, but I'm sure they'd rather use the right tools.

A dremel is ok if you know what you are doing!! I think it was KingCranker that was selling the shafts for dremels on here. I have one, I use it on med/low speed and it works GREAT!! Just don't put it on high speed trying to save yourself some time, because it will carve FAST!!!

I'll second that. You will at least need some stable mount for the ball AND the Dremel drill. If you do it "by hand", I am sure that the hole is crap, edgy, probably too big, not smooth, etc.

Nevertheless, an Dremel is a nice tool to clean the engravings

I bought a reconditioned sander from my pro shop a couple years back for 50 bucks. Why don't you just look for the proper tool designed for the job?

I use a dremel to make my ovals. I have the dremel mounted on the bench, then I use the flexible extension shaft with the drum sander. The flex shaft is nice because it is smaller in diameter than the sanding drum which allows you to work all the way to the bottom of the hole. Go slow! It does not come out perfect, so I do not go all the way like this. I finish up by using a bevel knife to smooth any ridges or lumps. Then I hit it with an actual bevel sander. I have only done this on my last two balls, and they are by far the best fitting balls I own. If you take your time, you can get a great fit. I could never tell my drillers exactly what I needed when tweaking the thumb hole. I find it much easier now that I am doing my own.

On edit...using the Dremel drum sander on bowling balls is quite messy! I now only do it when I have someone (my kids love to help) to hold the shop vac hose right below the hole.
