Left handed drill help
« on: January 27, 2007, 12:56:57 AM »
Got a young lefty who tracks over his thumb and fingers. All the stuff
he throws has a "standard" drill on it,ie; pin around the ring finger and
cg close to the center of his grip. You can hear about 4-5 thumps on
release, quiet thru the mid lane, then 2 -3 thumps on the backend on
every shot. He has the best average in our house by about 15 pins, so
he's not a slouch. He has tried different releases, but all that does is
mess him up. 3 different drillers have also taken a shot at the tracking
issue, without success. Anyway, last night was out practicing with my
son, and he came down to join us. We talked about the tracking thing, and
he's quite reluctant to change because of how he'e been bowling. So we're
bowling, counting his thumps, and I told him to throw my son's (righty)
Zone Classic that's drilled pin above ring with the cg stacked.
NO THUMP, and it moved awesome for him.

So now what do we do? We have some stuff laying around that is close
to his span, we'll just reslug them to get pitches right and
let him have at it. But, when he gets new stuff, how do we
go about deciding what kind of a drill to put on it?

Thanks, raff.

Any chance this guy is a full roller?  If so, using a "standard" layout for a 3/4 roller will flare the ball into the holes.  If not, he's got to be a high 3/4 roller.  If his track's bowtie is laterally between the thumb and finger holes, he is probably flaring into the finger holes, explaining the thump down the lane.  Maybe his natural release hits the thumb hole a few times, then the track flares away from the thumb and further down the lane flares into the finger holes.  You might try a balance hole in the negative thumb quadrant to raise the bowtie, or on a new drill place the pin higher above the midline and kick the cg out.  Good luck, and let us know what happens.  --  JohnP

I have a low track in general...2.5 in. off the holes...am a lefty

have tried right handed lay-outs...w/VERY mixed results...

and nobody can explain it...

some balls will move the track to clipping the holes...while other's move the flair to 4 in.'s AWAY.

try plugging used balls...a drilling it standard 1 o'clock label drill for a righty...

when you get a weightblock that moves the track to a useable spot...get 'em a new ball...same one.

balls that moved my track away...which is what he's looking for.

hammer...real deal...ebonite infinite one

balls that move track closer...which he wants to avoid...hammer no mercy

why does a lefty play w/such drillings...just looking for a match-up on tough lane conditions....and I can also throw a very mean back-up ball..(ala robert smith) if the CASH is right...lol's...butch would be proud
