Title: drill layout question
Post by: chitown on March 07, 2006, 11:53:36 PM
On a symmetrical core ball how much of a difference in reaction would there be if the ball was drilled like this.

Pin in the leverage position, cg kicked right to 1 oz and no blance hole.

The other option

Pin in the leverage position and the, cg brought back to legal 1oz with an x-hole.

I know the ball with the x-hole would be stronger but how much stronger and would the reaction shape be different?

Depends on where you put the hole. Flare reducing? Flare increasing? Pitched towards or away from thumb? Pitched towards oe away from palm? Size? Depth?

I'm talking about a flare increasing hole below the PAP and pitched away.

Depending upon the diameter and depth of the hole, the bal COULD be made quite a bit stronger IF it doesnt burn up. By using a smaller diameter, deeper hole, you can change the core dynamics and have a more profound effect on the reaction. If you use a large diameter, shallow hole, you'll see less of a change. If you really kick the cg out and have a ton of weight to remove, you can use a large diameter and deep hole to create the largest increase in reaction.

From what I've read on here and from the bowling manufacturers, a weight hole will add/change a ball's reaction by 2-5%.  Probably not enough to see at full speed without using a video camera, but just enough to change how/when the ball flares and hooks.

Thanks bud that helps me make up my mind.  I think I will just drill the ball with pin leverage and the cg kicked to 1 oz and no balance hole.  This should be a nice complement to my other ball drilled pin aover bridge(pin 5.5" from pap).

I've found that to be a good approach.. if the reaction isn't quite what you are looking for, then you can go ahead and pop a hole in it.

That's right I never though of it that way.
