Title: Drill Press Requirements
Post by: tgs300 on January 17, 2005, 12:13:02 PM
I'm considering purchasing a drill jig for use on my floor standing drill press and I'm wondering if my drill press will be sufficent.

It's a 3/4hp, 16 speed, Morse Taper 2, with a 14 inch swing.

I'm not planning on drilling for a living...just my friends and family (and my own) to learn.

Thanks

I'm no expert. But my understanding is with most standing drill presses is that the stroke/Spindle(depth of hole) is not long enough. I think you need about 4-5" of stroke. The swing should be fine. Are you sure your bits are #2 MT. I though only the AMF 2500 drills used those?

Theoretically 3 inches of spindle travel is enough BUt it is inconvenient as you need to remove ball every time to change drill bits.

I have 4 3/4 of spindle travel and it is a tight fit to get bits in without moving ball.

My model Delta 17-365.  17 inch swing.  Only 12 is needed.  But that spindle travel.
