Drill press specs for home proshop

Hi guys.  I was wondering if anyone could tell me the specs needed for a drill press for a home proshop.  I have a chance to buy a barely used Porter Cable floor stand drill press with a 5/8" chuck and 4" quill distance.  Its says it can change speeds from 300 to 3,000 rpms.  I've drilled on an AMF Vacujig and Delta bench top drill press so I'm pretty sure this press will work..plus I can get it for $200. Then I'm thinking of getting an Innovative SJ-2000 jig and bits...so I think I can be up and drilling for under $2,000.00.  Let me know.

That sounds exactly like the one I've been using the last 2 years in my basement. It will work fine.

Just bought a floor standing Porter drill from Lowes after our old bench press setup from lowes finally died after 12 years. It was a manufactures defect.

If using an x,y jig it is a very easy and great setup that is very inexpensive. Our old drill had 3" of travel was the only down side, the new one have 4" will be a big improvement. Should be up and running this week.

That's nice, with the light.

I like at least 4 inches of spindle travel and at least a 16 inch throat.  Gives nice room to work around.

Here is the final product. Jig has been mounted and zeroed in. The porter stand up drill from lowes is very awesome and very quite.

The one in the pic is a Rudell.  It's a standard X-Y jig.  Works great.  The most inportant thing is to get the jig centered and aligned with drill chuck.  After that make sure to set the RPM's to 450 or 490.  Anything above that can cause vibration.

To give a few more details:

We glued two 14"x14" pieces of MDF together.  This was so we could mount the wood to the drill base and then mount the jig to the wood.  There was not a good way to mount the jig directly to the base with out drilling holes into metal.  Also, mounting the jig to the wood allows you to reposition the jig easier if you don't get it aligned correctly the first time.

Before screwing down the jig to the base, we determined the height the base needed to be.  We did this by setting the jig in place (as close as possible), inserting a ball in the jig and our largest drill bit in the chuck.  We figured the drill bit needed to be 0.5" above the ball to easily get the drill bit in and out (We tested).  This left us with 3.5" to drill holes with (which is more than plenty).

Thanx alot guys...these are just the responses I wanted to hear.  I contacted Innovative and John said his mill table and clamp type jig would mount to the Porter Cable just fine.  Has any of you drilled ITs with this setup...I would assume it would work just fine.

I'm going to setup my little shop in my garage and build a cabinet to enclose and store everything so this press should do just fine.  Looking to get the press now cause I can get it for $299 then buy the jig and bits next year when I have some money saved up.
