Need A Grip Change *Advice Please*
« on: November 27, 2009, 05:07:22 AM »
Ok, so here is the situation. Currently the way all my equipment is laid out, I have to apply a massive amount of grip strength or alot of thumb tape to keep the ball on my hand. If I don''t, it slips off and I get no hand on it. I''m looking to start working on a smoother release but it is very difficult to do so when I''m gripping the hell out of the ball.

Any suggestions?

I can provide more details if needed.
This is the first time I have asked for grip advice so not really sure what information is needed. My driller simply says, ''If it works, why fix it'' and it simply just does not work the way I want.

Thanks

A lot of tape is ok. You want a fairly snug thumb. I usually go a little looser than most and stretch my span about 1/8 in. Don't be afraid of tape to tighten up a thumb hole. I know people who have 10 pieces in the thumb hole. You can also try a smaller thumb hole obviously. You might also have success with a molded thumb hole. These are all valid options to get a more relaxed grip. Just don't get they thumb hole too tight. That will cause it's own problems.

I'm already using a molded thumb. The issue I have is as soon as the thumb because snug, the ball gets hung up at release and alters my roll and everything. There just does not seem to be a comfortable balance.

you could try a tighter thumb and put some reverse pitch in the thumb hole.

Yes and no.  Usually people who grip the ball have more reverse than they need.  From what he said, more reverse is the last thing he needs.

First, get your span re-checked.  Adjust the thumb to a proper size plugging and re-drilling if necessary.  A few pieces is OK, but more than 3 in the front of the hole is changing your span.

If you still need to grip the heck out of it, you need to be more forward of where you are.  If you have a relaxed span, you can make big changes to the pitch without any problems.  Move the pitch at least 1/4" more forward and see how it feels.  Making multiple small changes might take you a long time to find what's right for your hand, so don't be afraid to make a big change since you seem to be having a lot of trouble with excessive grip pressure.  If you went too far, you can always go back a bit.

Curious to spans and pitches as well............

As for the tape, I've used up to about 8 at one time.  I always have one piece of white up front and stack the rest in the back.  I rarely get more than 3 additional white pieces in the back.  I use electrical black tape on the sides to create a more snug feel.  I started doing this last year and would never consider going back.

I think you should have your entire fit re-evaluated....

Regardless of thumb pitch, size and shape, if you want to use less grip strength you will have to shorten your span. A longer grip will mean more grip pressure.

Depends on the original fit, but typically for a 1/8 forward/reverse pitch change in either fingers or thumb I wouldn't change the spans at all.  --  JohnP

For the fingers, the span adjustment is 1/16" for each 3/8" pitch change. For the thumb, the span adjustment is 1/16" for each 1/4" pitch change. All adjustments should be made off a good base grip.

This.

I have similar problems. I see so many players that do not use any tape and many more that don't put the tape in the place that they need it. Its a challenge a lot of players have to overcome to make the best of their game. Also, bad technique can exacerbate the situation, causing you to have to use a tighter thumb than you really need, so take a look at that too.

I usually have to tape the ball up in practice and then gradually remove pieces as the games go on. If you haven't tried putting tape in the sides, you might find it helps far more, especially if you have an oval thumb and big rotation on the thumb. Mines rotated 45-50 degrees clockwise for example.

I'm also an advocate of shorter span with some forward. I shortened mine 1/8" and went 3/16ths forward.
