House shot woes & matching up with equipment
« on: June 14, 2006, 12:33:13 PM »
Right now in this particular house I'm bowling summer league(s) in has one of the easiest house shots around but I am struggling in there due to poor matchup.  The first 2 weeks of the league I was just getting back into "bowling shape" after a 3 month layoff so my mechanics and timing were very suspect.  Now I feel like I'm throwing the ball well again, maybe even better than I was before the break but I'm not shooting numbers in the house like I should be(or should I say, how everyone else is!).

As far as the house, it's a 6 year old brunswick synthetic surface with extremely clean backends and a shorter pattern.  There is recovery around the 10-7 boards downlane and a little margin for error in the midlane, but other than that, bad shots outside too late or early will result in not coming close to the pocket.  Where everyone kills this house is in its characteristics of being able to play the track for an unlimited amount of games.  Guys who pipe the track(with almost any type of ball), slow hook the lane with just about anything, and guys that boom it to the track(between 7-13) typically score the highest and most consistant.  I'm able to do all of those physically and get to the pocket as consistant as they can, but for the past 3 weeks(in two separate nights) I've been in tap-city.  I've kept a tally on the last 2 weeks on both nights(12 games) and what I have is between 25-27 tenpins and I've missed 4.  Most of them have resulted from either too much or too little entry angle.  I have tried a few different hand positions to change the shape of my hook down lane and even surface adjustments with coverstocks but it seems as if my matte/high grit sanded equipment is coming in too flat for weak 10s and my gloss/polish equipment is too sharp for the tenpin.  Here is a quick equipment rundown(I will not name the balls):

*2 medium aggressive assymetrical pearl reactives
-One at 800 grit w/ 4"pin(high) x 5 1/4mb
-One at factory finish w 5 1/2"pin(high) x 3 3/8mb
*2 highly aggressive reactive solids
-One w/ Rough buff w/ 4 1/2"pin(low)
-One w/ factory polish w/ 5 1/2"pin(low)
*1 medium load particle
-High Gloss, 5" pin(high)

With these balls, nothing has matched up to the point where I am able to string strikes consistantly(and even catching the occasional trip or off hit for a strike), especially the entrie set while making adjustments.  The look I have on the lanes is just like everyone else(hit a 5 board area and get to the pocket), but the carry percentage is just not the same.  Here is what I have at my disposal to drill for tomorrow night:

2 medium aggressive med-low RG, pearl reactives, 4" pins on both
1 medium-low aggressive med-low rd, solid reactive, 1" pin

So for you gurus, what kind of drilling/prep would you use in any one of these balls to promote a bit more forward roll to get a bit better carry?  Keep in mind, it's no problem getting to the pocket as far as the ball goes, I'm just trying to find a better shape as far as entry angle goes.

Try taking a ball that has just a little too much finish as it is right now and take the surface up to about 1200 wetsand or like 2000 abralon.

Dude, I forgot to mention I actually did try that, at first all of my equipment I listed had the complete opposite surface.  My highly polished balls were a smooth finish with a gold scotchbrite and the balls with surface were polished with Storm React-A-Shine.  Sorry I forgot to mention.  Maybe I haven't found that "magic grit" but it looks like so much of an issue of how the ball is entring the pocket.  It's really hard to smoothen out a reaction on this shot and while I can generate a good amount a hand if need be, its not nearly enough to use pin placements as weak as 5 1/2+ and I don't have a really strong ball lying around that I could drill weak(which I think would almost be the best solution).

For what its worth, the three balls I have at the shop fully plugged are:
-Silver Streak Pearl
-Ti Messenger Pearl
-Mike Aulby MVP

Hey guys, I ended up drilling a Silver Streak Pearl 5" pin over ring finger, 3 inch shift with the C.G. and the weighthole right on top of the C.G. to reduce flare.  I had an unbelievable look and carry the first 7 shots of practice and the first game.  The second game I saw a little transition and tried to chase the shot inside 3 boards the last 4 frames which didn't end up with that good of results.  I did squeak out a 214 somehow with 2 splits though.  Last game I took a 6 board jump left with a Rush and whacked it to end the night with a 690 something set.  It was a high scoring night all across the league with about 10+ games over 270, 2 300s, and an 800 but I still felt pleased being able to say I shot 690 while I wasn't throwing it that well just because I had the right ball matchup in my hands.  It looks like I have a solution for the next few weeks(hopefully the rest of the season).  I might add 1 more new ball to my league arsenal just so I can round it out with 4 Rotos in the bag and leave my other 3 balls and new stuff I'm getting for more tournaments and sport shots.

I've been stuck in some what of the same circumstances since I moved.  The house is nice and lots of people score just fine there, just not me.  The last two weeks, I've been using a Tour Power with good success.  I've not had good luck in the past with low RG equipment (usually particles), but I love the roll of this ball.  Gives me early revs and good read (but not hook) on the pattern.  One week I had a really good shot with a Silver Streak Pearl.  I have other equipment similar to the Messenger Titanium Pearl that sounds perfect for me that didn't score well.

I'd consider the medium-low aggressive med-low rd, solid reactive, 1" pin ball that you have.  Drill it pretty strong, move left, keep it in the oil and play nice and agressive.  I've tripped a bunch of 4's, and if I would have tripped them all, I'd have shot some really big scores.
