You cannot put a pin further than 6 3/4" away from your PAP - a quarter circumference of a ball. Otherwise, you will receive negative flare or other funny results. At 6 3/4", the core's dynamics are zero - it is in a stable position, as well as if you'd put it on your PAP. And, yes, PAP is measured from your grip center at 90° to the side and then again 90° up/down, you are correct about this.
Where is a pin located on a typical ball of yours? As a low tracker, it should end up in the middle finger region with a 6" layout? On a stacked drilling, the CG should end up in the palm area?
The more pin distance to PAP you have, the longer the ball will go and the effect of having the core "tumbel" into a stable rotational position (which creates the flare) will be reduced.
