Drilling clarifications
« on: February 14, 2007, 06:11:05 AM »
When someone gives a measurement and stats "cut to cut", does that mean cut to cut of the holes before inserts and slug or does that mean cut of the fingers to cut inside the slug after slug is installed?

Lateral thumb pitches-When looking down into the thumbhole, does right lateral mean that the thumb is tilted towards your palm or away?

If someone was to tell you their span is 3 15/16", would you drill both fingers with 3 15/16, or would you drill one 3 15/16" and the other one longer?

I think I may be confused with some of my terminology.

Take the slug right out of the equation. Cut to cut is from the leading edge of the thumb hole TO the closest edge of the finger hole. 0<----->0 .

Lateral pitch is side pitch. Right is towards the palm (thumb hole). Reverse is away from fingers.

  Was I clear?

So right is under the palm and left is like holding your thumb "to the left"? I forgot to say that I'm righthanded.

Cut to cut sounds pretty clear to me.

If its clear to you, then whats your definition?  There are already two different ones in this post.  Not saying one is right or wrong, I would just like to know the industry standard.

There is no industry standard.  In my shop cut to cut means from drilled finger hole, before insert is installed, to the front edge of the thumb hole, paying no attention to the slug.  I have worked in shops where cut to cut means from the front edge of the drilled finger hole to front edge of slug hole.  The main thing is that everyone in a shop understands what is meant by cut to cut.

I would think "cut to cut" is different than "span".

"Cut to cut" would be the shortest distance between thumb hole and finger hole WITHOUT grips installed. The measurement is based only on the DRILLED holes. This would need to be known if ordering a ball online where you plan to install your own grips.

"Span" would be the shortest distance between thumb hole and the hole IN the grip.

Left lateral is away from the palm for a right hander.
Right lateral is under the palm for a right hander.

If only one span measurement is given, I would drill the thumb on the vertical centerline (making the span figures the same for both fingers).

I would take it to mean as Jon described above.  With regards to the span, if only one value is "reported," I would assume it is the longest overall span (for most people, this would be from the edge of the thumb hole to the edge of the ring finger grip).  What the other finger span might be... who knows?  Every person's hand is different.  For a large number of people, the middle finger span is generally 1/8" shorter, however I have seen no difference, 1/16", 3/16", and actually the other way where the middle finger span was longer (only once).  Without actually measuring a person's span, its a guess at best.
