drilling experts your help is needed:
« on: January 11, 2009, 07:20:11 AM »
Ok I have a guy that I am drilling for now for awhile..

High BALL SPEED 18+
Very Minimal Revs
PAP:  4  1/2  x  1/4 up
*plays up the boards on evry shot.
very accurate but Struggles on longer and heavier patterns due to such high speed and low revs

His Arsenal:
Rapid Fire - pin under ring cg kicked out at 45degrees pin  4  1/4" from PAP
Avalanche slide- pin above bridge cg kicked out slight right (dry lanes)
Total Inferno - pin under ring cg at 45degrees taken down to 360 abralon.
Grand Illusion - drilled Rico

MY QUESTION:
WHat kind of drillings will work for him on Heavier and longer patterns??????
(keep in mind 2 year ago I drilled up an AWESOME HOOK  3  3/8 x  3  3/8 and it went straight as an arrow????????????

AMB Centaur particle (or any Visionary high load particle) drilled Rico or what Ebonite used to call "rev Leverage" (pin on the midline and CG stacked below it about 3")!
It comes with a high load of particles and sanded to 320 grit US. If he can't hook that he should quit. (only half joking.)

If dull resin balls with a very strong Mass Bias won't let him hook the ball, like the Awesome Hook, I'd guess a high load of particles in a ball with an early rolling drill would be his last hope.

But seriously, why can't he slow down a little bit, if he really wants to bowl on heavy oil?

Ive been trying to work with him on slowing the ball down and dropping the ball lower b4 his first step. Anytime he does this he turns into Walter Ray like accuracy to a 5 year olds accuracy. Evrything gets messed up (timing, balance, swing)

Surface is going to be this bowler's friend.  Try taking one of his balls way down, say 150 grit, and see how that reacts.  If he likes it he'll need to get some sandpaper and touch it up by hand every few sets (not during competition, of course).  --  JohnP

My original thought was also a lot of surface but if that doesn't work.  Try a strong "reactive" piece at rev lev or maybe even 2.5-3 inches from pap but keep the pin on or near the x axis.  Not sure how high the pin was on your stack lev Hook but based on your description, this bowler does not need to have any pin above 2-2.5 for heavy oil.

My reasoning for this is that if a particle/sanded ball cannot read the mids, his lower revs will most likely not be enough to respond in the backend or the 20 feet of friction (hypothetical situation).  A reactive or pearl particle ball can actually store more energy to be released in friction plus the pin near x axis will help the ball rev up quicker and naturally.

Unfortunately, we are technologically not there yet either where we can just drill a ball for "any" bowler to guarantee a response.  Hopefully this may help some...

surface is huge!! last year we went to nationals and he did fairly well with a total inferno - pin under ring cg at 45 degrees and cover at 360 abralon.

His big thing is he gets on the long and heavy stuff and that 360 grit burns up to early leaving him alot of buckets and washouts and late 5 pins.

Thanks Rick for your input I am going to try that on the next ball

Low pin cell at 1k with 4 inch pin to pap and 4 mb to pap or Sauce at 1k with pin at 4 inch 2 inches above mid grip line if these dont hook give up on heavy oil.

360 Abralon is equivalent to about 180 by US standard grading system, in the range I recommended.  Try putting a light coat of polish on top of it to get it down the lane before it grabs.  --  JohnP
