Drilling for a 3 Piece
« on: January 24, 2005, 03:35:20 PM »
I have a question about drilling up 3 piece/pancake weightblock balls. Is it true that the pin location on these balls is nil-none when it comes to reaction characteristics? I have heard from different sources that due to the nature of the core, it really doesn't matter where you place the pin (heard this from an old driller, not sure if its reliable or not).

If this is true, does this mean that statics have more of an effect on 3 pieces than on 2 pieces? The reason I ask this is because I am looking to drill up a purple pearl Hit from storm to fit underneath a label drilled tornado (1/16 ounce negative side, a little thumb weight also, pin 3 7/8 from pap), and was wondering if it even mattered where the pin is placed in relation to my pap.

Btw, balls specs are 1.5 inch pin, 3.2 ounces top, if that makes a difference.

stanski -- It's not really that static weights have less effect on balls with pancake cores than ones with dynamic cores, but instead that the effect of pin placement is so strong with dynamic cores that the static weights are almost negligible in comparison.  With pancake cores, weights are all you have to work with.  Set the layout to get the static weights you want and don't worry about where the pin falls.  --  JohnP

Ok, that is what I have heard in the past and what I will go with then. Probably go with some finger weight and a little positive side to get the ball to recover on the backend and get length. Thats really what I have been looking for, and hopefully i'll get it with this ball (on drier lanes). Thanks John!
