If CG don't matter...

Then drillings all symetrical balls with the same pin distance from axis will flare similarly if cg is placed in different areas near the grip and where weight holes are not used? Flare only decreases or increases depending where x hole is placed??

I have symmetrical balls drilled 4.5" (one with cg 40* and other 65*) from axis and all don't have weight holes..the balls flare a lot but the reactions are different from the cover strength.

I'm wondering about this because two of the balls I use at leagues are drilled with 4.5" pins different cg location and with differnt cover strength. Both flare about the same, one is longer and has a harder backend, and the other more even earlier midland read...

I'm just curious....

Let me guess, one is longer and sharper on the backend on the fresh, and the other is earlier and smoother after 3 games have already been bowled on the same shot with the first ball?

I'm not too keen when it comes to this subject, Even if I see, I still have doubts if I'm right. Lack of education and experience in this field. Just want to validate it I guess.

Both balls on fresh flare the same but have different ball motions. Just makes me think too that too many people put too much emphisis on layouts.

I think 1" pin up is sharper in the backend vs pin 1" down. And If we add a weight hole on P2,  it carries the ten pin better than if I change hand position and place my none bowling hand on top of the ball on my set up. 😭😀😳😜

Yes, the average joe house hack bowler puts too much emphasis on layouts.  A right handed bowler could take a ball drilled for a lefty and score on a house pattern.  The highly skilled bowler on sport/challenge patterns on the other hand can benefit from tweaking layouts.  Still the coverstock is the #1 factor in ball motion.

I didn't care much about layouts, then Mo Pinel laid out a ball for me and gave me a ball reaction I had never seen before.  So layouts are important, but average joes like myself only need a couple different layouts.  From there it's just surface prep and balance holes to tweak reactions.

after reading this, I'm afraid to add a flare reducing hole to a ball that flares over my thumb. the ball has a 4x4x2 layout and I like what I see when bowling longer patterns. I just don't want to keep repairing/replacing thumb hols/slugs repeatedly. I go through spare balls and thumb hole repairs often. the ball already has signs of chipping around the thumb...
