Title: Drilling hole for a thumb slug

I have drilled a few of my own balls and am going to drill the next one with a slug.  When drilling the hole for the slug do you drill it at 0 pitch?

My driller has always drilled the hole for the slug with the desired pitch
of the thumb hole.

He told me that it was to prevent drilling through the slug into the ball.

 Drill it with the same pitches as you are going to put into the actual thumbhole.

i always drill mine and others with the same pitch as the thumb hole is to have.

i usaully drill mine 0 pitch. Unless they have a lot of pitch and a big thumb.

remember-if you drill a 1 1/4 inch hole and pitch it (lets say 3/8 reverse), the slug will not fit in the hole(the hole isnt 1 1/4 anymore) it will be bigger. Does it matter-no , but i dont like the look-doesnt look professional in my mind). If the had a big thumb and 3/8 revres, i may pitch it 1/8 for slug.

does this make sense?

We setup the press as if we were going to just drill a normal thumb. Set the span, pitch, everything. Then change the bit to the slug size you are going to use and drill using the thumb pitch. This will center the thumb hole in the slug.

After drilling we insert and glue the slug. Use the router to cut it down flush to the ball and then re-measure the thumb position and drill the thumb hole.

Yeah, just like Pinbuster said.  Set it up and start with the thumbhole bit.  Line it up, then switch to the larger bit so the thumb will be centered in the slug when you go to drill.  Set the pitches THE SAME for the slug as you do for the thumbhole.  That way if you ever need to replace it, it's a lot easier to keep track of.  There's nothing I hate more than sticking a pitch gauge in a ball somebody brings in to reslug, and then when I THINK I have the right pitches and start drilling, then I have to do a whole ton of guesswork to eventually get the slug out cleanly, which rarely happens just cause people have to make it harder than it should be.
