lookin for some input
« on: March 07, 2006, 01:50:37 AM »
I recently pluggd and redrilled a RotoGrip DefCon I. I laid it out with a "Rev Leverage" drilling from Ebonites Symmetric Layouts Page.

The layout description says to put the weight hole at 6" at a 45 degree angle through the CG from the center of grip. Knowing that this ball flares ALOT i put the weight hole only 3 1/2 inches away to prevent the falre rolling over it.

This ball is not giving me the reaction I was hoping for, actually it does not do much of anything. The DefCon is an aggressive particle ball with a rather aggressive layout. Threw the shot last night in league wiht the most volume of oil that I bowl on (39 feet flatter than THS) and it skated and skated and didnt really bite the dry unless I slowed my speed down.

what should I do or what is the problem here. Could the lack of reaction be from the weight hole being put in the wrong place or what?

"Rev Leverage" as what I understand it to do is rev quickly right off your hand and get into a roll very early so that the ball does not skid in the oil as far as it would with a conventional drilling.  Also, in order to get the best results, you need to drill a fairly big weighthole at least almost 3 inches deep to get the most effect.  The way you're supposed to determine where to place the weighthole is to draw a line from the center of your grip, through the CG and place the hole on your VAL (Vertical Axis Line).  I agree with your observation about the 6 inch length as it might flare.  Most people do not have a axis point 6 inches over.  I've only seen a couple people through a ball with rev leverage and it really makes the ball roll early and control the backend.  You more or less have to point the ball to the pocket in my opinion because you are not going to get a backend reaction with this drilling. And I believe this type of drilling works best on Mass Bias balls even though Ebonite has this layout for symmetric weightblock balls.  If you wanted it for oil, I would have drilled it maybe "true stacket CG" with  the pin and CG at 3 3/8" from your PAP or put the pin below your ring finger and kicked the CG out some.  I am personally going away from these unique layouts and putting more conventional layouts in my equipment and matching the layout to the core and coverstock accordingly.  You might want to post this in the Rotogrip forum and have RotoDave or RotoRPS get back to you and they probably know this ball better then me.  Good luck.
