Silly question, What would be classed a weak drilling on a strong ball and a strong drilling on a weak ball?

A few more questions came to mind.  By what standards is a strong ball strong, and a weak ball weak?  Examples would be nice.  What would you do with the balls in between?  Is the purpose of drilling balls in this manner to control track flare in order to avoid over/under on anything but the extremes(flood/toast)?  I don't know if rev rate plays a role in total flare, but I'm sure it affects the separation between the individual flare rings, so is there a way to tell how strong or weak one should go to get the optimum amount of that separation?

For me, pins beyond 5 trend toward the weak, especially if above the fingers. The only ball I have with a 5-by pin that I still get a lot of flare out of is a Track Strike Machine, which is drilled pin down.

I've got a couple of balls that have pins of around 5.5 - 6 inches away. These balls tend to be very mild for me. I think the coupling of the long pin-to-PAP distance with the orientation of the pin above rather than below the fingers is what makes it that smooth.

By contrast, I know some guys that drill just about everything 5-plus and they still cover the whole lane. So, your mileage may vary.

how would this affect someone like me with a 500+ rev rate? i too have thought about this and actually had a paradigm with about a 5.5-6" pin to pap and i hated it. i want a virtual gravity but have shyed away from it because of the strength and i just dont see that much oil. so how do high rev rates do with weaker stuff drilled strong? stopncrank

In your case, it would probably be better to go the other extreme. You would probably do well with Virual drilled 3x3, or drilled pin axis.

Ball would read very early, and hook set, giving you kind of a slurve, on the lanes.

Is the Rico layout considered strong?  I'd probably be interested in putting that on a weak ball especially since weaker balls tend to be flippier which I don't normally like.
