drilling the Buzz from Lanemasters
« on: November 17, 2008, 06:28:44 PM »
I have had The Buzz from Lanemasters for about a year now and have not even used it.The ball was previously owned and drilled once with only about 5 games on it.My pro shop guy was going through a location change so Iwent to another pro shop until he got his store situated.I asked the guy to drill it for length and a nice sharp hook at the breakpoint. He drills it with the fingers above the pin and what I have now is a ball that clears the heads fine but when it starts to make its move it starts to turn and then it rolls itself out and never finishes.I was very dissapointed. Is the ball worth plugging up again considering its been drilled twice now and I hate to turn the core into swiss cheese and lose all reaction on the ball not that I have much now. Please, any advice will be well received.

The Buzz is worth redrilling correctly. The core is simple with not a lot of flare.

Aside: I'm kind of surprised when you say the ball is rolling out. While low pins can help that to happen, the Buzz is such a ball that unless you're bowling on very light oil or you have very low ball speed, it is very unlikely to roll out, in the true sense of that phrase.

I would expect it to hook earlier than a pin over the finger, of course, and maybe for the overall hook to be slightly less, but I would hardly expect it to roll out.

Is it at its stock surface: 800 grit sanding plus a high gloss polish?
If not, that could be the cause, as the sanded Buzz can be aggressive. I would expect the sanded Buzz to roll out.

I speak from some experience with the ball. I have two, one pin under the ring and one higher andto the outside. I have experimented with different dull/matte surfaces and different levels of polish, and used them on different lane surfaces. Dull or matte, they do need medium or heavier oil.

Good luck with the re-drilling.

I agree with Charlest. Mine is drilled with the pin in the ring finger and a slight swing of the cg. I have no problem getting it to push through the heads and it is continuous even on medium light conditions. I have a little better than average ball speed but I don't throw hard by any means.

If being used on mediums to medium light with it's OOB surface, even with the pin down it should not be rolling out.

You have a very good average Jim based on your profile. Maybe you can tell us a bit about your style and the conditions you are using the Buzz on.

I agree with charlest, try surface changes before you plug/redrill it.  --  JohnP

I want to thank you for the replyies back. When I bought the ball it was a used ball to begin with and the ball was nowhere near polished.Like I said,my pro shop guy i normally go to was closed for a few months and I had to go to another shop when I should have waited.I throw pretty hard and I like to swing the ball probably from 15 to the 5 board.I still have quite a rev rate surprisingly for being 42.The speed I throw I could not tell you.I bowl with the owner on wednesday night and he tells me that it's a 38ft.pattern with medium oil in the center and dry on the outside. It's a nice shot but usually by the middle of the second game it begins to transition. You are all probably right when you say that it's not a big flaring ball and it's probably something a bit out of my comfort zone.I am currently using an ogre pearl, storm dimension,roto-grip destiny and a storm spit fire.I have become so accustomed to the big hook that when I don't see it from something I should have done a bit more research on I probably would not have bought the ball but there is something that intrigues me about this ball and I feel I can make this ball work for me.I did alter the surface on it by bringing it up to 2000 abralon and polished it with some snake oil.I'll take it out the the lanes this afternoon and see what it does before I go to my league tonight and will give an update. Thanks again for all the valuable info.this is the reason I come to this site is to learn more about how to improve my game.

2000 grit Abralon = 1000 grit US.
(Abralon uses the FEPA, European standard)

The Buzz's stock is 800 grit US. SO 2000 Ab + Snake Oil is close to the stock surface.

Even though this balls does not flare a lot, the cover is farily strong and it has a strong backend for anyone with any "hand" in the ball. There are many times, I can't use it because it hooks so much, especially at the backend.
