Title: Drilling Through The Pin?
Post by: Strapper_Squared on December 06, 2005, 03:39:36 AM
I just picked up a NIB seek & destroy.  I sent a request into MoRich for a layout and received a reply back suggesting that I use:

Pin: 4 1/2
MB: 5
Pin above mid-line: 2 1/4

When I layed the ball out, it happened to fall just so that my ring finger would be drilled through about 3/4 of the pin.  From my experience, drilling near the pin is just asking for troube...  I have seen many cracks, chips, etc from drilling in this area and would like to avoid it if at all possible.  So what options do I have to keep a similar reaction, but alter the layout such that I have at least 1/8" between the ring and finger and pin?  Obviously, pin placement is most important..so keeping a 4 1/2" pin is probably important.  Could I get away with placing the pin further above my midline (which would give it more length) and shortening the MB to pin distance to counteract it???  Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Strange...the drillers I've talked to all say that you're actually better off if you can drill through the pin.  They tell me that it's the "interface" between the pin and the shell that is at the root of most pin-related cracks, so by drilling through the pin, you avoid this problem altogether.

And yes, I've drilled several balls through the pin, and I've never had a problem with cracking.

When I have drilled through the ENTIRE pin, I have seen ZERO problems....however, I have had a few balls drilled for myself where I left a portion of the pin, and it would fall out, leaving a void, crack, chip, etc...

Yes, exactly..  If I could drill out the entire pin, then it probably wouldn't be a problem (actually may be my best strategy)...  just when a portion of the pin is remaining, it wants to crack or chip...

Just try to tweak the drill slightly to completely drill the pin out.  Remember that most of the reaction is from the coverstock and that the core plays a smaller part in the reaction.  So a little tweak can't horribly change the overall reaction you'd see.

Strapper, I have had 3 balls drilled with the pin in the ring finger. I had no problems at all, except one had a void which allowed ball filler to jar loose & come out. If there is a hole in the bottom after drilling, just pour in a little ball plug to seal it.

I say tweak the b@stard one way or the other and dont sweatt it after that. I personaly drill the pin out every chance I get if i am close to it, i have had way to many cracks and seperations by being to close or on top of the pin unless I drilled it completely out. By seperation I mean large half moon shaped pieces coming off of the ball.

Alright.. that's probably the way to go then...  for some reason, I just sort of hate the idea of drilling the pin out though...  I guess it only has value as a reference point...
Stupid MoRich for using oversized pins anyways... LOL

Seeing as they are oversized on Mo-Rich balls you can just plug that finger hole the same color as the old pin at time of sale.  Viola! The pin reappears.  LOL
