Drilling Thumb Pitch
« on: March 20, 2007, 10:20:36 AM »
1 question. When drilling the thumb for a slug, I know you set the pitch on the jig before drilling the slug hole. After installing the slug, do I then set the pitch back to zero for drilling into the slug?

You set the pitch before you drill the slug hole. That is so that the thumb hole is drilled into the center of the slug and not out the side.  I set the ball up to drill the proper size thumb hole drill it a little to make sure that it is where I want.  Then with out moving the ball i switch to the slug sized bit usually 1 3/8 or 1 1/4 and drill the slug hole and insert the slug.  Then I switch back to the actual thumb size bit and drill that all the way through the slug.  Then zero out all your pitches and use the slug cutting bit to level out the slug.  Bevel off the edge and your done.

Before and after the pitches should be the same so you can have even amount of the slug to custom fit your thumb to top to bottom of the slug.

So you are saying set the pitch before drilling the slug hole and leave it the same for drilling the thumb hole into the slug? The only time I take it back to zero is to cut off excess slug?

Correct!!!! Or you could use a router to cut the slug down.
