Drilling to back-up
« on: November 12, 2011, 03:03:10 AM »
Is there some way to drill a ball so that it will back-up?  For example, a ball that will back-up when throwing at the 10 pin.  I have developed a mental block on this pin and would like to try something different.  And yes I have spent hours and hours in practice but am still having a problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

The back-up ball "backs up" because of the rotation the bowler puts on it. There is no magical layout to make a ball back up (by itself) unless you release it accordingly.

For bowlers who release it that way, you can lay one out to compliment the release and make it respond more aggressively once it finds friction.  A right handed bowler with a back-up release can use balls laid out like a left handed bowler, just for his own grip.  Does that make sense?

The other way is to put the Pin and CG in line with the grip center (vertically) and you should have a ball that will go either way depending on which release you use.

Well how do you line up to shoot at it? Do you miss it predominantly to one side or the other? I have taken the ten out numerous times with plastic and with a high performance ball at 1000 grit. I just refuse to believe that a special ball will make your spare for you .... Its like saying you just cant strike and a special ball will strike .... Another question, how often do you miss it? Your post doesn't say you can't hit it, it says you have a mental block. Let us know ....

I use plastic and have tried nearly all lines from standing far left and throwing over the 4th arrow to moving right and using the 3rd arrow.  Sometimes I miss it right (in the gutter) and sometimes left.  I've used nearly every kind of hand position I can think of.  "How often do I miss it?"  Well last week I shot a 591 and missed five ten pins.  Last summer my average was 195 for the season and should have been well over 200 if I could make the ten pin.  I have spent many hours at practice trying a lot of different lines and releases.  In practice I make it about 90% of the time.  But when the lights go on, I'm lost.  I've tried getting a coach.  Maybe a hypnotist could help.  Anyway, thanks for the answers about drilling something to back up.  Maybe if I aim for the 1-2 pocket I won't have the ten pin to worry about.  I can make the seven.

Thanks again.
