Drillings to control flare?
« on: June 16, 2005, 06:37:17 PM »
I've noticed that the way my style is that perhaps my equipment is not exactly matched to my game. I have a slow speed(12-14) and I'd say about a med rev rate with about o say 60 degrees axis rotation normally(although I can change it easily). To keep it short I was thinking I have basically all my stuff drilled leverage except for a pin under power diesel for the heavy stuff and a pin above slate blue for extra length for dry.

What are drillings/ways to cut down on flare? Leverage seems to be too aggressive for me. Seems all my stuff jumps off the dry or rolls out on me. What are some ways to drill stuff to cut down on flare/control drills?

Just wanting to get some ideas here.

you may also want to experiment with a reverse flare layout. I have drilled it for a few customers with slower balls speeds and have had decent success with it for them.

Surprisingly drillings that are very close to PAP (say  1 3/4) or close to track(say 5 1/2 from pap) both reduce flare a lot(by 2/3 of potential) and as a result both seem to give easier push down the lane as the ball covers very little ball surface with each flare ring(less imbalance from core).

Lately I am finding 2 X 2 and 2 X 4 and 1 3/4 X 2 to be very smooth and surprisingly good length.  To get a little pop instead of putting hole on PAP put hole 1 inch past pap or 2 inches past pap(on a line from ring finger thru PAP.

Smooth!

I find the 5 1/2 drilling to still give a good amount of flip at the back as the core is still in a high differential (or high potential position) with the flip block set up vertical and ready to do some work at the back!

Thanks for the replys everyone, I'm hoping to pick up at least 2 new balls before next season and try some of these lower-flare drillings and see if they match up better. Thanks again.

Hex,

What you should do is try 2 different drillings and see which you like better. I would definately use some older equipment. Plug and redrill, incase the layouts don't match your style or game OR do what you want.

FIRST:
The pin further from PAP is not a bad idea. Try placing it 5.5-6 inches from PAP, it will push down the lane very well.

SECOND:
Try having a ball drilled with the pin 1 inch from your PAP. You could even go 2 inches from PAP with the pin, as LL mentioned. This type of layout generally rolls early and gives a very smooth reaction off of the dry boards.
