Dry fit for thumb slug?
« on: August 10, 2008, 12:36:40 AM »
How tight should the dry fit for a thumb slug be? I've just started using thumb slugs and want to make sure enough epoxy remains on the slug when installed.

A dry fit on anything is when you are testing the fit of things but not actually attaching them yet. So when I dry fit the thumb slug I'm putting it in without epoxy. If the fit was too tight all the epoxy could be scraped off.

New question. Do I put the epoxy on the thumb slug or coat the hole in the ball? Now that I'm thinking about it the epoxy probably goes in the hole.

You don't dry fit....just put the glue around the hole and put the slug in.

Say Mike, I know you work in a proshop, but, after checking sizes with a micrometer I got 1.1245 for the thumb slug and 1.1230 for the carbide drill. I know it's only .0015, but that makes it an interference fit. I wouldn't think that is the kind of fit you'd want. Maybe I'm just being too fussy.

I'm not sure about the numbers, but when you drill the hole with the specific, lets say 1 1/4 bit, the 1 1/4 slug will fit just fine.

If your slugs are fitting to tight, scrape or sand them to reduce the size a little.  And why would you use epoxy?  Most pro shops are using super glue, like Zap.  The gel type gives you a little more time to get the slug into the hole.

I rough the slug and the inside of the hole with 80 grit sandpaper, then insert the slug a little more than half way.  I then apply super glue around roughly the top inch of the slug and hammer it in the rest of the way.  But be sure not to get glue in the air vent slot (which I always put at the back of the hole).

Thanks for the help and suggestions everybody. I see there are different ways to installing a slug and everybody is using superglue with no ill effects. Well, off to the drillpress.

Not being a smart ---, but if you can dry fit a slug by putting it in, then taking it out, good luck!!
