Dual angle layout for two handed bowler
« on: November 11, 2017, 03:51:22 AM »
Greeting fellows,

I am a two handed bowler and have been starting to practice for the past few month. I am planning to buy a brand new bowling ball, possibly the original Hy-road, and I am having some troubles on how to layout the new ball.

I am quite confused about the dual angle layout. People say that DAL can be applied for the 2handed bowler. But my concern is, the pin placement would be very different from the thumb in player as the grip center is measured in a different way. I was told that pin above the fingers will produce more length while pin below the fingers provides earlier hook.

So how dose DAL still being able to apply for the two handed bowler?

In addition, I've asked the local pro shop for advices but they've given me the same answer as I've mentioned above (about the pin placement).

Would somebody please help me with the problem?

Focus on pin to pap distance and keeping the static weights in regulation. Adjust surface as needed.

Don't over complicate things. Look at the Hyroads intended purposes and expect that kind of reaction.

I agree. Being a new bowler just try to keep things simple. Dual angle layouts also dont matter as much with symmetric cores

The link below takes you to the Pro Shop Information index at bowlingchat.net's wiki.  Scroll down to the Layouts section, then to the Specialty section where you'll find a link to Radical no-thumb layouts.  Click on it, then on the link to the .pdf file.  This may be more complicated than you want to get into.  While you're on the wiki take a look at the rest of the information that's there.  --  JohnP

Layouts are based on pin to PAP. You're correct in that no thumb bowlers have a different method for finding the grip center. You're best to trust the layouts from the grip center. Works for all my no thumb friends no problem. There are enough links to resources for some of the other portions of this question.

As someone who has been a two hander since 1992; I have learned simpler is better.  I stay with symmetric cored balls. Secondly; I only have balls drilled with pins 5 inches from my axis or 2 inches from my axis with the cg under my fingers.

I worry more about surface prep on the balls more than the dual angle layout.  All of my balls except one has the pin 5 inches from axis and above my fingers.  If I dont want a weight hole; I make sure to put the cg less than 3/4 inch from my fingers since the center of grip is between the finger holes.

If I do want a weight hole to make the ball flare a little more; I put the cg about 2 inches below my fingers and kicked out an inch outside the ring finger and then put a weight hole down to balance out the "thumb" weight.

Keep in mind that I do pay attention to the differential of the ball before drilling.  So I try to stay with balls with less than .040 undrilled so if I want a weight hole; I dont risk over flaring.

My Deep Freeze and Violent Eruption both have weight holes at P3.  My Gamebreaker 2 Solid is pin above ring and cg below ring with no weight hole.  I can combat most conditions with those 3 balls alone though I do have a Arson Low Flare Solid with pin at 2 inches from axis with no weight hole for more tougher/tournament conditions when I need to play straighter.
