Dual Angle questions
« on: December 21, 2010, 04:16:03 PM »
Hopefully I''m giving enough info here for generalizations... It''s late at night and the brain is a bit fogged right now

I think I''ve learned how to calculate using the dual angle system, but I wonder about something...

I''m a low rev lefty with > 45 rotation and 10 degree tilt, throwing 17 MPH at the line.

I have determined that my typical drill (pin left of ring, Cg barely swung out), seems to calculate at 65x4x70. I compared that to the one ball I have which always gives me a large hook. It''s a Special Agent, pin slightly up and over ring finger, Cg straight down and comes out at 60x4x40.

So far, the difference in hook seems to make sense. The Special is stronger than the other balls (Horizon Solid and Solaris Kinetic), and will change more forcefully given the second angle.

I also know now that being a low rev bowler with high rotation and speed dominant, I should use angles that total less than 100.

Makes sense, so far so good.

Another drill I''ve tried, pin up 1.75 inches and slightly left of ring with Cg/PSA fairly straight down, hooks very little if at all. I''ve tried this on several balls, always with the same result. Measuring that combination on a Perfect Rival gives me 60x4x30!

Hmm. Wait a minute. Something seems out of whack initially.

All balls are sanded to 1500.

By the dual angle system, I would expect the Perfect to react more strongly than it does, and close to the Special. Nothing could be further from the truth. It sputters and does very little.

Is it because
-I''ve calculated incorrectly
-The Perfect is an asym
-Pin up hooks later, it isn''t getting a chance
-The Perfect is a much weaker ball
-Too long a pin to Cg (5 inches in this case)
-The Perfect is an ugly color

Something else?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

The Perfect Rival is pretty strong, which, combined with the lowish angle sum is going to give you an earlier roll. At 1500 grit, the cumulative effect might be causing the ball to bleed lots of enegy leaving none left for the backend reaction.

I'd recommend posting your specs and situation on BowlingChat.net
There are quite a few people with a great handle on Dual Angle Layouts, including Mo Pinel himself.

The Perfect isn't an asymm, so thats not it. CG matters very little so that isn't it. The Perfect was my strongest ball on the PBA patterns when I had it. Not that I haven't had stronger but at that time it was. I threw it on everything except Viper and Cheetah. including the 50' TOC pattern. Mine was drilled 60x5x45 or so and I kept the surface at 4000. So either they are right and it is bleeding off energy or is it possible it needs oil extraction? I know I had to put mine in the revivor after about 30 games. But sometimes a lighter oil pattern can make a stronger ball look weaker!! Other than that go get Mo's opinion, he would know best.

On a symmetrical ball, the initial (first) angle of the dual angle layout will change after drilling. The Pin/CG/PSA line usually migrates towards the thumbhole. This will cause the first angle to become larger. Using a weight hole in the proper location can again reduce the angle.

The only effective way to know this is with a DeTerminator.....

Very good information, thanks to all who contributed. I've been learning a lot from bowlingchat.net recently and may read up more over there also. Thanks for the suggestion... But Ballreviews users always have good contributions as well!

That's an odd comment. All knowledge is good. I'd never tell someone not to go to a decent source to learn more about the game and think he provided a good resource.

Having a bad day?
