What difference does it make?
« on: May 24, 2007, 07:54:25 PM »
Whilst I understand that the pin placement is the primary factor in ball reaction in layout terms, how does the mb affect the ball reaction being placed in the three commonly suggested places? ie near the thumb; between thumb and val; on the val? And does this theory work on all bowling balls with mass bias?

Having used all 3 layouts with varying pieces of equipment, I will tell you that the results you get are going to be different depending on the amount of side rotation you use.

A bowler with less than 45 degrees of axis rotation is likely to experience the reactions mentioned on the chart ie stronger reacton with mb near the thumb, arc reaction past the thumb and roll near the val. A bowler with more than 45 degrees of axis rotation is likely to experience more reaction with mb placements near the val, early roll past the val and arc near the thumb.

Thanks CoachJim,

Well I can understand arc, I can understand stronger reaction, when the chart says roll(when the mb is placed on/near the val), what does it mean? All balls skid, hook and roll ?? As if the other two mb position doesn't allow the ball to roll?!

I said EARLY roll, it will get into a heavy roll earlier than other positions. All patterns allow the ball to roll, some more than others and sooner than others.

Let's say you have 3 of the same asymmetrical ball.  You put the same pin position on each one but use 3 different MB locations that you described.  You will have 3 different reaction shapes.  The MB close to the thumb in the strong position will back end hard and get into it's roll later down lane compared to the other 2 MB locations.  The MB location on the VAL will get into it's roll earlier and have a little less on the back end.
