finger hole depth ?
« on: January 14, 2007, 02:26:10 AM »
how does the depth of the finger holes affect the roll of the ball. I recently had a ball drilled by a new guy and the fingers are much deeper thant my other stuff. The top weight of the ball was not out of the ordinary 3 1/4oz

bluerrpilot,
Usually drilling the fingers and thumb reduce the top weight by approximately 2-1/2 ounces. That would have left your driller with 3/4 of an ounce to play with. Not knowing what you were asking for in the drilling or ball reaction, it’s hard to say. The geometry factors of finger and thumb weight mean the balls CG is either shifted up or down towards the finger or thumb holes. Basically, finger weight will make the ball go longer down the lane and have a snappier backend reaction. Thumb weight makes the ball roll sooner and have more of a smoother arc when it starts to hook.

Just a guess but if your driller took extra weight out of the fingers he was probably attempting to cerate more midlane read and an arching ball reaction.
