Finger Inserts
« on: January 07, 2005, 06:08:45 PM »
I have question:

I like my finger inserts very snug(nobody likes a sloppy hole).  I have a problem when warm weather comes around or it is hot in the center, I have to cram my fingers into the holes.

My driller uses the Vise inserts, he even has half sizes.  I like these very much, the tenth frames are good too, the turbos suck.  I have tried drilling the holes one size smaller with bigger inserts and drilling the holes bigger with smaller inserts.  No luck...what about drilling them larger with the same inserts??

What can I do to keep the inserts tight and still have the room to expand in the summer/warm times?

Thanks guys,
andrew

Andrew, some guys I know like them loose so they can stick little shims on the nail side of the grip to help snug up when they are not swelled up.

That's exactly why I went to inserts. I glue or have the driller glue only the sides of the insert. I use the largest size insert that my fingers swell to become. Then, when my fingers are smaller, I place shims, made from cut up business cards, behind the nail, between the insert and drilled hole's wall. That way my span is not increased. I use a 1/8" flat blade screwdriver to insert and remove the shims, as needed. (That screwdriver is also perfect for inserting thumb tape and many other bowling purposes.

I use Vise Grips half sizes and Pro Sports Contour Power grips super-soft (my favorite!). Tried Turbo and Tenth Frames inserts; I prefer the first two.

Charlest and I must have gone to the same school as everything he says he does and equipment he uses is identically the same as I do/use. The only place we differ is that he likes Vise Grips and Pro Sports Grips. Turbo Grips are my favorite. I used to use Turbo Quads, but have since switched to Power Ovals.

I am tried all of this before with the tenth frame inserts.  Maybe it will work better with the Vise, it seemed like I was always too tight or too loose with 10th.

Andrew, I know you said Turbo sucks, but have you ever tried the Turbo Power Oval? I used to use Turbo Quads and liked them too, but I recently tried Turbo Power Regular and Turbo Power Oval and liked both these two Grips better than the Quads, mostly because the power side of the Quads has very little taper. They are a wee bit firmer then Vise Grip, but I find that to be no problem for me.....I note you like your grips snug, so the Power Ovals may not work for you. I like my grips a wee bit loose so to me, the Power Ovals are very comfortable because they are made oval plus having the power lift side. Their Power Regulars are being discontinued. I'm going to check to see if the Power Oval is also, or if it is just the regular.

Here is the amount taper for some of the grips furnished by KOTM

Turbo Quads.............1/8"
Turbo Power Regular.....3/16"
Turbo Power Oval........3/16"
10th Frame..............3/16"
Vise Grip...............1/4"

Brickguy, I am using the Vise ovals...I guess I don't fully understand the "taper", is that for power lifts not ovals?

Andrew, it is the side of the grips that is flat on one side of hole. The top is a wee bit wider on the flat side and if you will look inside of the grip, you will see this side gradually tapers in to the round side of the grips. Wish I could explain it more clearly, but I'm not great at explaining. (probably why  I always got into trouble when I was a kid....lol)If you are using the oval side of the Vise Grips, and if they are the longer finger insert, then the other side should have a flat side that is wider at the top than it is approx. 1" down. Do they?

They Turbo Power Ovals are an oval grip but they also have a power lift side built into the oval. All other grips that have a power lift side are flat on thet side and the rest of grip is round and not oval. Thats the best I know how to describe it. Maybe someone else can help the explaination here. Remember, I said the Turbo Power Oval grip is a wee bit more firm than your Vise or Turbo Quads. I always thought the Quads were softer than the vise, but that's just me.

I'm familiar with the Turbo Quad, but not the Power Oval, but I'm pretty sure the "taper" is the same.  This is actually forward pitch that is built into the grip.  The table Brickguy provided is the amount of forward pitch.  When I drill for this type of grip, the customer and I decide what pitch we want in the finger holes, then I offset the pitch in the grip by drilling that much more reverse pitch in the hole.  --  JohnP

John, I have both and the taper in the Power Oval is more than the Quads. See my chart. I can feel that 1/16 difference. If you go from the 1/8 on the Quad to the 1/4 on the Vise, you can really feel it. You are right on deciding on what finger pitch prior to drilling finger holes. For example, if you would drill a 0 Pitch hole and then install Vise with the power lift side, you would end up with a pitch close to the same as if you drilled the hole with 1/4 forward pitch and then installed ovals......Why am I saying all of this as you already know this and are way better than I at this knowledge....lol

The Vise inserts are about 2" long, yes they have "tips/lift" on one side, flip for ovals.  I am sure that I could find a turbo that fits, but the problem is still minor swelling and humidity.

It will adjust with your finger.. It feels WEIRD at first for awhile, after awhil it gets better, You just have to use smaller grips though..

Andrew, IMO I think probably the best thing for you would be to make sure the fingers are loose enough and then shim and unshim as needed, with business cards as Charlest suggested and as he and I both do. I take business cards and cut several pieces 1/2" wide x 1 1/2" long and put them in a small container in my bowling bag. Then when my fingers are too lose, I take one out, fold it in the middle, and put it behind the finger grip. If this is too much, I then cut it in half and place a single piece behind the grip. If it isn't enough, I add more. Etc. Go with the grips you like best, make sure they are big enough, and add/remove shims as needed. Do this and I think it will work for you and you will be happy.
