Hey all. I am a high track player and I''m curious if there are pin position or lengths I should avoid? Example: should I not put a pin more than 4" from my pap? Should I keep it above my fingers or doesn''t it matter? I have a csystem 3.5 with a layout of 55x5x70 which puts the pin real close to being right under my bridge. This is the only ball of the 10 I own that rolls over the thumb and I wonder if it''s because of the layout.   My pap is 5-1/2" over 1/2" up  righty. Thanks

You have an almost identical PAP to mine.  I've actually done quite a bit of drilling work and discovered all the layouts that do and do not work for me.

I'd say you shouldn't drill a pin to pap distance of anything further than 4.5 inches.  I drilled a low flaring ball 60 x 6 x 60 and I rolled over the fingers and the thumb every time.  I was looking for length and control and that's exactly what I got however I kept hitting the fingers.

Additionally, I wouldn't do anything less than 3.5 inches from the PAP.  Anything less than that tends to roll out and not retain any energy.  I've found my best layouts to be 4 inches.  I don't own any equipment with a pin drilled under the fingers either.  The reason is that for my high track and rev rate I don't have enough axis tilt to put the core on a pin under drill in a high flare position.

For example, my long oil or heavy oil drill would be something like a 40 x 4 x 40.  This results in the pin about 2 inches above the fingers and 1 inch to the right.  Sounds like stacked leverage but with a higher pin.  I find this drill to read the midlane and have a strong continuous backend move.  When I drill pin under fingers I struggle to get it to read the midlane.

This has nothing to do with the pin to PAP measurement and everything with MB placement compared to your finger holes. I have a Cell that gets over the thumb a lot. When you move your MB around it moves the location of the "bow tie" of your flare. I have found that when I have a mass bias more than an inch above my thumb whether right over or kicked out it gets close to the thumb hole.

i am around same pap as well. i use anywhere from 4" - 5 1/2", but usually always keep my pins up. figure you can still get a ball to read sooner, just by adjusting coverstock and such. great posts guy. stuff like this is what keeps me coming back. always good information to learn from!

A general guide as one size does not fit all but generally the lower the pin the less friendly it becomes for high trackers.
