Finger pitch?
« on: September 06, 2004, 08:14:57 AM »
I need some input on a finger pitch problem. I have a large (1/8" high)
painful bump on the top side of my middle finger,
between the top knuckle and fingernail.
My finger drillings are now strait into the ball, with 1/8" side pitch.
I am going to drill up a new ball, and need a recomendation on which
direction to go. I am a little confused about forward/reverse pitch
descriptions, but assume forward is away from the palm, while reverse
is more toward the palm.
My questions are:
1. How far to go?
2. Will a change affect my release?
3. Do I need to change the span too?
I have discussed these issues with my driller, and
while he does a good job with layouts, he is kind
of bewildered by this problem.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,raff.

I will answer what I can.
Forward is toward ball center.
Reverse is away from ball center.
1 - ?
2 -  yes putting forward in the fingers will shift some of the ball weight onto the fingers and allow you to keep your fingers in the ball a bit longer giving you more lift and vice versa.
3 - Maybe it all depends on how much forward or reverse you put in. Adding forward may require a slight shortening of the span and vice versa.

One thing that might help would be to try Vice Vacu-Inserts it is a sleeve that is 1/16" larger than your inserts that goes in the bottom of your finger holes and you attach your inserts to it, this leaves 1/16" around the inserts for expansion. This can also be done by your driller with out buying the sleeves by first drilling a normal depth 31/32" hole then drilling in 1" with a 1 1/32". He will need to put glue all the way around the bottom of the insert as well as a spot at the top of each side and the back (palm side). The purpose of the glue all the way around the bottom is to give a good seal this allows the grips to actually draw a slight suction. You will need to use grips that are 2-3 sizes smaller (1/32-3/64) or they will be to loose. I find this setup to much more comfortable especially if your fingers swell a little.

Thanks for the replies.
Bob 7, yes it is directly bowling related. Shot 9
games over the weekend, this morning couldn't
bend the last joint and bump was ouch.
I do use grips with lifts. I probably use a size
or two larger than what I should, because of this
issue.
Stormin1, I will check with my guy and try the Vise insert
route as well.
Here's what I'll do right now:
I am going to take an old ball, and just experiment drill
a bunch of finger holes. That way I can get an idea of where
I need to be. If no luck there, I will head to the big city
and talk to a driller that is hopefully more versed in this area.
Again, thanks.
