I have a question for any finger pitch gurus out there. I was thinking of switching my laterals to 0 and 5/8 due to arthritic fingers and constant numbness.
Any good reasons for doing this or not doing this?

Bigmike,
You usually want to have 3/4†laterals in some combination to keep the finger holes from coming together at the base and weakening the bridge, especially with a standard ¼†bridge. Maybe you could go 1/8†and 5/8â€.
I use 3/8†x 3/8†to get ¾†with a 5/16†bridge. Just to play it safe.

Hey Mike,
This truly depends on your personal necessity for this. I've done a few "different" finger laterals for individuals who had arthritis or some form of work injury.
Nothing wrong with different pitches but more importantly is what pitches are comfortable for you. I'd also recommend checking your forward/reverse pitches (as inferno mentions) to help possibly alleviate any discomfort.
(Tom) is also correct in the recommended standard for opposite laterals in the fingers to equal to a minimum of 3/4. I believe Bill Taylor's parallel impression was/is left 7/16 and 7/16 right. Hope this helps some....

Or, if you want to stick with 0 for the MF, use 3/4 right on the RF (assuming you're right handed). -- JohnP

I have the same problem and kept moving my lateral until I could no longer feel the side of the hole on my finger. For me, that was 3/4 and 0 (left handed...) I then started all the way back to 3/4 reverse, but it was more than I needed and I lost quite a few of the revs I had which were already in short supply

I'm back at 1/4 - 3/8 reverse now and experimenting with 1/4 unders in some balls on days when the fingers feel good.
All due to cracking my knuckles when I was a teen. damm stupid thing to do, and paying for it big time now.

Signature? I don't need no stinking signature...

i have 5/8 reverse and 3/8 reverse.. helps me stay clean and not rip on the ball, while i can still throw good quality shots. Also relieves pressure from the finger.

I've tried to tailor the laterals to the person's fingers, arthritis is very unpredictable. Make those pitches go in the direction of the crooked fingers.
Have drilled as much as 1 1/4 reverse for guys fingers, he was about 30 years old and his fingers were this stiff. Makes gluing in grips a little tough, but can be done, and he said he could bowl without pain.
Don't be afraid to try some different things, nothing is wrong if it works.

I'll say you should definitely have the fwd/rev pitches checked. Your numbness tells me you may have some fwd pitch in your fingers.
When you place you fingers in the ball where do you feel pressure? The nail? The side?

Actually I have 1/2 rev in the left and 3/8 rev in the right. I use 1/4, 1/4 for the laterals. My span is 4 1/8 and 4 1/4 drilled.
I am paying for letting someone talk me into using 3/8 frwd in both fingers on top of using semi-grips which add another 1/8 frwd. This was in 1992.
What I am thinking about doing is going 5/8 rev and 1/2 rev on my fingers and using 5/8, 1/8 laterals. I am going to lenghten my span 1/16 to 1/8 since I am adding more reverse. I am going to try this as an experiment.
My hand is a mess. I like my grips tight and my fingers swell so much day to day and game to game. I am thinking of also adding vacu-grips in the mix.

You must not drill the holes very deep or they would come together at the bottom. -- JohnP

they touch about 2/3 of the way down. Like I said before, my hand is a mess.

You don't have problems with the bridge cracking? -- JohnP

Bigmike, if you don't have the vacu rings. You can drill it without them to try.
You already have quite a bit of rev in the fingers. Perhaps that is making you squeeze alittle to hang on?. What is your thumb pitch with that span?

I got a new Epic Quest a few months back and just bowled my local City Tourney and my wrist has been hurting pretty bad. Never had wrist problems before. Not sure what my pitches are in my fingers but a friend of mine changed his pitches to help his wrist and it helped. But we are totally different in our bowling. I am sorta conventional and turn the bowl a little more than the normal person but if anyone knows anything then please just let me know.

1/8 forward 1/16 left. And yes, the bridges occasionally crack.

Also what pound ball do you throw?
My brother had the same problem and tried a lot of different pitches that he found info about online. Both finger and thumb. (from some great sources and still didn't help.)
He dropped from 15 to 14 and the pain went away. He also started throwing the ball a lot better/smoother.(he's 34 y/o)
Maybe something to consider.

Hey Muncie, here are a couple of things to check to see what's different on the new ball which is causing you pain.
1) Double check the span on the Quest. If the span is a little long, it causes us to utilize more tendon/muscle effort to hang on which causes unnecessary strain. My analogy to this is similar to lifting a mattress without handles, even though that weight at one corner isn't very heavy, it's the lack of having a good grip around the object that forces us to use more muscle effort.
2) Compare finger forward/reverse pitches from an old ball (that didn't hurt) to the Quest. Just a slight change forward can cause us to physically hang onto the ball longer which then adds to the pressure on our wrist. Based on your explanation of turning the ball a little more then average, this sounds like it could have an affect on you. As a good precaution, you should also make sure laterals are the same as before as well.
From experience, I found that bowlers who lift fairly strong are more sensitive to forward/reverse pitches due to the lift effort applied. For example, I have a few "true" crankers that have to use 3/8-1/2 reverse in their fingers, anything less and it causes them discomfort in their joints/wrist. Hope this helps some...
