finger pitches; more forward?
« on: March 26, 2005, 02:21:58 PM »
I would like to try more forward pitch in my finger holes to hold the ball better during the swing; keep the fingers in a bit longer after thumb is released; Any thoughts or insights? Any problems or pitfalls?
Any suggestions?
I have a very weak wrist and have reduced my thumb pitch gradually from 3/8 reverse to 1/16 reverse and it has worked wonders for my grip, less muscling, better swing.  thanks for any observations.
I am at 3/16 forward in the fingers now.

my hand feels as relaxed as its ever felt since i switched to 3/8 away in my fingers.

i use the semi(p/s) finger grips for a little extra lift.

tim,

Everyone's hand is different, if you feel you can handle the forward and want to give it a try, do so.

The only thing I would be on the look out for is that after going more forward in your thumb already, and then wanting to go more forward in the fingers as well you may need to adjust your span a little.

Thanks for the replies; I am older now and not as strong as I used to be so thus the less reverse on the thumb.  Anybody out there try a lot or some forward on the fingers.
I am worried if I try reverse on the fingers I will just lose the ball at the bottom. However, being one of those older stroker, rev-challenged types, my main problem is hitting up on the ball. I guess it goes back to starting bowling 40 years ago with those rubber balls.

timw -- The pitch you NEED in your finger holes is determined by your joint flexibility.  If you have the pitch you need, losing the ball at the bottom won't be a problem.  Most of us older folks need some reverse because of arthritis.  I personally am using 5/8 reverse on my ring finger and 1/4 reverse on my middle finger.  Now, if you WANT extra forward pitch, go ahead, but be aware that it may damage your first finger joints.  I would change back at the first sign of soreness.  Also be aware of what happens when you use extra forward.  The second joint bends up off the ball to allow the first joint to get in its hole.  Then you lift with a small area of the finger tip.  Several customers that I've put into reverse finger pitch actually find they get more lift on the ball because they're lifting with the entire pad of their finger tips.  --  JohnP

Most guys that have say 1/4 forward with fingers and also have lifts(total of maybe 1/2 inch forward between hole and inside of powerlift pitch also tend to not use minimal reverses or forward thumb pitch.  They now have the fingers staying in for a long time and therefore will add more thumb reverse from a reduced pitch as they add forward to fingers!

REgards,

PS haveing both fingers and thumbs forward dependinb on span can tend to bind one up in the ball!

so the logic would be to go to a bit less forward or some reverse in the fingers as I changed the thumb pitch to less reverse?
And the theory would be that this gives a more comfortable grip?

The theory of if less forward in fingers maybe less reverse in thumb or more forward is correct.

More comfortable I don't know.

My criteria is how long do my fingers stay in?  How long does my thumb stay in?.

I adjust from there!

As I bowled tonite in league it seems as though perhaps I am better off with a smoother release by going less forward or even away pitch in the fingers.  Since I like to try different things for better swing and release I am going to try less forward and perhaps even go reverse in the fingers and see how it goes.  Thank you all for your thoughts. It seems as though away pitch in the fingers is something I want to try for that airplane landing release.  Since I have gotten the thumb pitch to where I want it (much less reverse from 3/8 reverse down to 1/16 reverse).

Pitch question in regards to comfort...

I'm at 0 on the fingers (1/4" lateral left/right) and 0 on the thumb (forward and lateral)...I get discomfort in my hand often times at the release, sometimes even leading to a tingling feeling upon release.  This normally only happens at the house where conditions are drier.  And this doesn't happen with just one ball...not entirely sure what the deal is...any suggestions would be helpful!
