Basic or not so Question
« on: February 08, 2009, 03:15:58 PM »
So I currently have a PAP of 4 1/4 straight out with a High Track, High rev rate, and around 14-15 MPH ball speed and have been strictly throwing brunswick for about 5 years. I have had a problem in the past of tracking over the thumb or fingers with certain layouts, IE RICO or Pin above the middle finger CG swung out. I have also had a problem picking layouts that compliment my style either they hook to early and hard, or too late and a extremely poor entry angle. Looking for some suggestions on layouts and equipment. Is this an equipment problem? Do I need try to change my PAP?

I just picked up a NIB Hammer Psycho 2-3" pin with 3 oz top as well as a blue vibe 3-4" pin with 3.5 top. Any suggestions would be helpful. Looking for the Psycho for some length with a some backend on medium oil synthetics. Blue vibe for dryer lanes good length with a controlable reaction.

thanks

Psycho: Might consider pin above/just outside of ring with your MB directly under PAP, weight hole to get rid of excess side weight.

--------------
--------P-----
-----O-O------
--------------
----------CG-Xhole
--------------
------O-------
------------MB
--------------

Blue vibe: I would go something similar. Maybe stack it like so:

--------------
-----O-OP-----
--------------
--------CG--Xhole
--------------
------O-MB----
--------------

I'd drop the pin a little lower than that, but if you go much lower, you might run into tracking over the thumb. Also might consider pin over bridge on the psycho...

***NOTE:

I'm no hammer expert, so there might be better people to listen to out here on BR, But I think these are very good layouts to consider. Plus, with these layouts, I've had the most general success with changing coverstocks to develop the versatility of the ball.

B-Mac,

If your PAP is 4 1/4 over as you mentioned, you don't track that high, meaning it is VERY hard to hit your finger holes. You better get it re-checked.

Generally, layouts with pin over finger holes are safe enough to "place" the bowtie high enough. Also strong weight holes, around 2,5-3,5 inches down VAL from your PAP raises the bowtie, keeping your finger holes safe.

For the Rico layout, make sure to drill the xhole. Without a weight hole IT IS NOT RICO! It is the most important part of that particular layout, in terms of both reaction and raising the bowtie.

As far as suggestions for your style.. hmmm, lots of hand with a slower speed. Asymmetric balls with higher pins, 5 to 5-1/2 range, lower drilling angles for control (20-25 degrees) would work. However, surface is the most important part. Whatever ball with whatever drilling you choose, you must adjust the surface (if needs be).

like Natal says, maybe your balls are getting drilled as if you have a 4 1/4" PAP, but it's really 5 1/2" or even higher, ESPECIALLY if you're hitting the thumb or fingers. That is your real problem and it could very easily be casusing these bad ball reactions.

The PAP should be checked on a ball that doesn't flare at all or very little, like a polyester ball. Sand it a little and play a 4th arrow shot at the pocket to insure there are oil lines on the ball. Doesn't matter if it doesn't hook. Just make sure you use your normal strike release.

Have that PAP checked out first and, then have an older ball redrilled correctly. It could make all the difference in the world.
