Fire Quantum drilling....

I got a Fire Quantum from ebay for $72... and I can't seem to find any specs (i.e. drilling) for it...

Do you have any info on this ball???

Also, what is your opinion on finger inserts?? The last 3 balls i've owned have had all 3 finger inserts... I'm tossing the idea around about not getting a thumb insert to let me thumb get out earlier... any thoughts???

The Fire Quantum has Powercoil 18 coverstock and a flow-throw mushroom core with high flare potential and low RG.

Not using a thumb insert or slug is a bad idea in my opinion.  The resin in the coverstock can cause your thumb to stick.  If you want a fast release, I'd go with a urethane thumb insert/slug.

I got an FQ redently and was curious about the RG and DIfferential; so I emailed Brunswick. The famous Tom Tomaras emailed me back a chart that had the FQ with only an RG differential of .032, which would translate to 3-4" max flare, sort of low-medium. It's an Excel spreadsheet, if you'd like me to mail it to you??

I have a friend that bowls in Oakwood lanes, he uses a Cherry Bomb and the Fire Quantum there.  He told me that the FQ reacts very similar to the CB but is more vicious on the backends.  He said that the backend movement is so strong that when the lanes are freshly oiled he can't throw the FQ.  Is it possible that low DIF equates to somehow saving up more energy just to release this strong backend and pin punishment?

I don't doubt your numbers, but differential alone doesn't equal flare.  Flare potential is also related to the RG and the coverstock.  I'd suspect the pearl resin cover and low RG of the Fire should get around 5-6" of flare.

Brunswick gave the Fire a 7.6 rating on flare potential using its old scale.  I think that rating should also be in line with my 6" estimate.  Can you correlate it with your old chart?

I will grant that its not the extreme flare potential 7"+ that some balls are designed to get.

I think you're right about this FQ as I placed my pin above the ring finger, something I rarely do. (and the CG is in the negative side. This ball makes a major league turn when it hits dry; again, something even strong pearls don't do, for me, as much, even when I place the pin below the ring finger. HOWEVER, I wonder how much has to do with the PK 18 cover, which even when pearlized acts more like a polished solid, rather than the core????

My chart only has the actual RG differential, .032.,  and their (dumb) average RG on a scale from 1-10, 3.5.
