First Time Ball Driller

Hi Everyone;

   I would like to learn how to drill bowling balls via this forum. Over the summer I purchased the necessary equipment to set up a shop in my basement. My goal here is to go step by step though the process of drilling my first bowling ball. I realize this may take several weeks of questions and answers. I have no money or time to take a ball drilling seminar.

   I have read a lot of material on drilling and the layout of a ball from online material. You have to start somewhere so here we go:

Ball:
Lane Masters Counter Strike Particle Pearl
Coverstock: Particle Pearl
Ball Color: Dark Olive/White  
Finish: 1000 Sheen
Flare Potential: 5" (Medium)
RG Average: 2.586 (Medium) on a scale of 2.43-2.8 Very low-High Break Point
RG Differential: 0.040 (Medium) on a scale of .000-.080 Low-High Flare

Ball Specs On Box:
Weight: 15.2
Top Weight: 3 3/4 oz
Pin: 3 3/4

Bowlers Style:
Stroker type bowler with 16.5 mph ball speed.

Drilling:
I want to drill the ball Label Leverage if possible. Pin 3 3/8 from P.A.P. and CG close to center of grip 0 to ½ inch right of centerline.



Ok so what is the first step in laying out, measuring, weighting, finding or marking to this bowling ball?

I realize this may take a while so be patient with me.

a suggestion from me to you.. If this is really your first attempt at drilling a bowling ball, I would take an old ball get some plug and practice before drilling a new ball.. unless you have the money to waste on another ball.. just a helpful hint..  slashrr69

OK, I will not put any holes in this ball. I would like to however start the ball rolling by laying out the ball. Help me get started. What is the very first thing I need to do or weigh in order to layout the drilling?

Pin to PAP is only one of the measurements you'll need.

Span and pin height above centerline are two others that you'll need before you start laying out the ball.

When I have more time, I'll see if I can find some of the stuff that I used when first starting out.  I'm still a beginner, but there were a couple of things that I found that really just made it click (as far as laying out a ball).

like others have stated, use an old beat-up ball first to practice on.  and practice alot, your never too good to learn more.  chech out brunsnick.com like others said, he has good vids on how to do things.  when you start to get the feel for it and an understanding of all the lingo and whatnot, start reading Mo Pinel's stuff over at the morich website.  and dont be afraid to ask any of us through pm or post.

AMF sells a kit with an armidillo and a ball layout video. Best I have ran across.

Don't be afraid to ask questions on this site. You will get a few non-productive answers, but as a whole, the information you receive will be worth putting up with the one or two jackasses that feel like they are the only ones smart enought to drill a bowling ball.  
 
Buy used balls (cheap), ball plug, and use them. The more you do it, the better you get.
