When adding a weight hole, there are varibales that need to be taken into consideration ahead of time.
First, of course, is what the bowler can create. The higher the rev rate, the higher potential a weight hole can create effect.
Secondly, yes you have to look at the strength of the existing pin position to the PAP and the existing amount of flare that is present. If the pin is leveraged or 3 3/8" from the PAP, more than likely the core is at it strongest point and a flare increasing hole would either be ineffective or give the appearance of lessening reaction by over flaring or becoming unstable.
There are 2 types of flare increasing weight holes, one that is on a line from the pin through the PAP and one that is down the VAL from the PAP.
They effect the shape, as well as overall reaction.
If you want slightly more overall with more back end, you would use the weight hole that is on a line from the pin through the PAP and past it either 2 1/4-3 3/8" or 6 3/4".
If you want to increase and strengthen the overall reaction, as well as create and earlier reaction, you would place the weight hole 2 1/4-3 3/8" down the VAL from the PAP.
The size of the weight hole and depth also effect the reaction. Shallower generally creates an earlier reaction and a deeper weight hole usually will create a later reaction.
Knowing the reaction you are trying to create ahead of time increases the success potential.
