Pitch and span question for drillers

Regarding pitches and spans - what is a reasonable expectation of driller accuracy - 1/16" , 1/32" - even smaller? Thanks.

I have another question that is related to span. The span drill on my balls is a stretched span which I have been using for many years and is being copied every time a different ball is done.. I am in my mid 50's and starting to have some issues with my hand.. Went to my Pro Shop and got re-measured.. and 3/8 inch shorter with my finger crease in the middle of the insert.. I am currently only doing one ball to see how it works.. Is the the right approach?
Any other issues like thumb reverse, etc?

Without seeing you bowl and without seeing your hand, its hard to tell on pitches, but when I fit someone, the crease in the middle of the insert is the absolute longest span I would put someone in. Most of the time, I suggest the edge of the insert exactly halfway between the creases on both fingers. You didn't say what you thumb pitch was, but if shortening the span, you will probably need less reverse than you had.

Do the rest of you drillers agree? If I ask 4 drillers to measure the span and pitches in a ball drilled by someone else would you expect them all to provide the same answer? If not, how much error would you expect? Thanks again.

Span guages can be different (shouldn't be, but I have seen it) but if you take all of your stuff, use one span guage, and they should all be the same....

Bevel CAN make a difference.....but if you start seeing a noticeable difference...time to find someone new!

I agree.  I took 5 different balls to my driller and had them measured - only 2 of them were the same!  All except for one were drilled by the same place, so, I had 4 drilled by the same place that were all different - anywhere from 1/8" up to about 3/16".

Difference could have been:
a) human error, several different drillers in the shop,
b) different measurements - error in calculating the cut-to-cut measurements due to inserts, thumb bevel, etc.
c) some other reason???

Pitch all seemed to be consistent.

If you are taking your stuff to the same place, unless you are making adjustments, you should expect all drillings to be the same.

I don't care who drilled your equipment, that much variance is horrible!  Any person who is careful should be able to replicate a span to within 1/16" or less (and that's taking into account bevel, accounting for grip thickness, etc).

As far as fitting a person for span, here is the article I go by (and never had a problem) when recommending a span:

No wonder I was having issues with my hand... I guess I will validate the drill on one ball and more forward.. This discussion has been very informative and thanks to everyone. After bowling for 30 years, just shows that there is always things to learn....

Definitely.. a "relaxed" span is the preferred method of fitting right now...  comfort, relaxation, and repeatability are key.

I go for the opposite. I actually have my span about 3/16 to long and then fine tune the feel with thumb bevel.

In my experience even a 1/16th variance is unnaceptable. My driller is SPOT ON with EVERY drill...not even a 128th off (and he has literally drilled hundreds of balls for me). It took another driller 3 tries before he got it just right( I measured after each drill, called him and said "you're 3/32nd's off" and he'd adjust the specs accordingly) and now he too is spot on.

A sixteenth of an inch can make quite a difference depending on how stretched your span is, or, for someone like myself with hand/wrist issues it's absolutely imperative that the drilling be accurate as possible (and it IS possible to be exactly right).

BTM appreciates the PR and I think its a compliment, but our publisher wouldn't like it too much if she saw actual copies of its articles printed on the internet without permission. As for not having all your spans the same, can't you tell the difference throwing them? I can tell if a span is off 1/32" one way or another, the minute I put my hand in it and especially when I throw it once. I posted earlier and didn't mean to hijack the thread at all, but I agree with Mo's system of fitting.
