What would cause a ball to roll over the middle finger hole, but further away from the thumb hole.  The pin is about 1 inch below the ring finger and a little right.  An extra hole is past the PAP and VAL.  If I put alot of forward roll on the release you can only hear it thumping a little after about 50 feet down the lane.  But any more than approx. 45 degrees axis rotation and it pretty much thumps the whole way down.  It's my only ball with either low pin or extra hole past the VAL, so I don't know which is causing it.

Just to explain safe zone a little more, quoting Jeff Piroozshad: "There is something called ''the safe zone'' which is located above an imaginary line from the PAP to the middle finger.  If the pin is placed below this line, there is the danger of the flare hitting the middle finger.  If the pin is above this line, the ball is ''safe'' from this result.  Generally, this is only a problem for higher-track players and for high flare potential bowling balls."

So, simple answer - no, you are not necessarily going to have to avoid low pin balls - there is just a limit on how low you can go for each style of throwing the ball and ball type.

I had the same problem when i Ricoed my first ball my track is very high and will hit fingers if i don't keep the pin bout 3/4 of an inch above the center of my grip or if i get the pin too far left about 6 1/4 away from my PAP but every ball flairs differently that's why you should take your PAP off a plastic ball some cores just roll heavy to the fingers i thought i laid  out my Yeah Baby in the Safe Zone but when I released it any different than usual with same amount of rev it would roll over my middle finger. Any ways good luck with finding a solution

What kind of ball is it?  (its important to know if its a high flaring or low flaring ball)  The position of the pin is relevant, but the location of the balance hole is probably the culprit (if its a high flaring ball).  A hole past the VAL Increases flare...  

May try a change in balance hole location (thumb quadrant- stay on your VAL or inside of it)  This may reduce the flare and raise the bowtie enough to keep it off your MF.
