Thinking about trying something new with thumb
« on: July 25, 2006, 02:08:29 PM »
One of the best fit balls...perfectly fit balls is my spare ball Columbia White Dot. Like my other balls the fingers are drilled staight in with a small amount of bevel. This ball I figured there was no point of getting a slug so I had it drilled straight in also. When I first got it only a mild hit hit of sandpaper and I mean mild and it was perfect from there. After using it throughout all seasons here, and we have all types it didn't affect my hand whatsoever.

Half of the balls I own I don't like the "feel" of the slug. Requires the perfect amount of bevel, perfect amount of tape...etc. So I have an older Brunswick HPD with an overly beveled thumb ( he wasn't good at drilling balls )and I pretty much have difficulty throwing it unless I squeeze it hard. I was thinking about plugging the thumb and have it drilled straight into the ball. I've seen others do this. I know the downsides I hear about it is resin sticks and is too tacky but my fingers and especially thumb require alot of rosin because they are always sweating and oily. It's gotten worse over the last few years so I've had to use textured tape on both sides of my slugs on all my balls. So all I can think about it more the plus sides of this, and the fact saving the money not buying any more inserts. I'm going to try it on this ball and see if I like it and if I do I'll have it drilled on all future equipment.

search for a shop that can drill and bevel the two thumbs the same. or a better option search out a shop that has the custom thumb or thumb molding systems to make molded slugs of that WD thumb.

The problem is that you will probably be drilling back into plug, so you won't get an accurate feel of how this will feel in all your balls.

i am the most finicky person about my thumbholes in the world, and as a result, went to something where i can change thumbholes on a whim at anytime (Griploc!). Anytime I don't like the feel of a thumb (which is what happens about every 3 months for me), bam, i drill up a new one (or 3) and get it perfect. Makes it so much easier than having to plug up equipment, having tape feel different ball to ball, etc. The tape thing is a big issue with me, as i believe you can never place tape the same way twice, and this will always make thumbholes feel different unless you use the same thumbhole for each ball (which you can with griploc).

Yep, a switch grip system is just what you need. Saves money and enables you to try different pitch configurations (drill the outter sleeve at zero/zero and you have about 1/4 inch leeway in how you drill the pitches).

I also lose the feel for my thumb and it's great to just pop in another switch grip with a different pitches whenever I need to.

SwitchGrip is a slug.
