Full Roller help

I drilled a ball for a buddy of mine who has a full roller track.  He holds and throws the ball very similar to(although not near as well as) Tom Smallwood, in that he only puts his thumb into the first knuckle.  

This was the first full roller ball he has ever had.  We just eyeballed the standard 7:30ish drill with the cg near the grip center as an expiriment.  The ball is a plugged Rapid Fire Pearl, so its symetrical.

Although the reaction is phenomenal for him, he is constantly clipping the middle finger with his track.  Other than this, the track is between the fingers and thumb.  He is a fairly high rev player, I''m guessing 300-350.  Any suggestions on how to drill the next ball so he doesn''t track over the middle finger hole?

A full roller needs a special layout to reverse the flare so it is away from the fingers and thumb instead of into them.  The "standard" full roller layout is pin at 7:30 (45 degrees into the thumb negative quadrant) and 3 3/8" from grip center with the cg on the line from the pin through grip center.  Any drill sheet will show this layout, identified as for full rollers.  I have a customer that rolls a "half thumb full roller" and I've modified the layout a little, making the pin 4 - 5" from grip center to get the ball a little further down the lane before it breaks, and that worked fine also.    --  JohnP

I'm sorry JohnP, I mistyped when I said 1:30.  The drill we used was an eyeballed 7:30.  I'm not sure how far away the pin was from the grip center, but I would guess between 3-4 inches.

Does he clip the MF when he throws a non-flaring ball?  If so the problem is with his release, not the layout.  If his track starts out between the fingers and thumb the full roller layout will flare away from both the fingers and thumb and the bowtie will be near grip center.  I've assumed he's right handed, that is correct isn't it?  A lefty full roller layout would be a mirror image, pin at 4:30 in the thumb negative (for a leftie) quadrant.  --  JohnP

He is righty.  I think he does clip the fingers with a plastic ball so the problem is with the release.  I guess he will just have to deal with hitting the finger holes as bowling is purely recreation for him.  I doubt he wants to put in the practice time to fix the problem.

You might consider modifying the standard full roller layout so that the pin is located on a line from grip center and perpendicular to his initial track ring.  That MIGHT help the track flare off the fingers more quickly.  I've never done this, so it's just speculation.  --  JohnP
