Title: full roller layouts, how many?
Post by: xrayjay on October 23, 2013, 01:59:14 PM
I had watched some PBA matches on Youtube during downtime at work yesterday, and noticed a young kid (20 yrs old) who had a full roller layout.

I remember knowing a older gent several years ago who I bowled with in WA state (go Hawks!) who was a full roller and had all his balls drilled the same way.  He relied on surface changes and was a pretty good 200+ bowler throwing a full roll.

How many layouts can a person with type of roll have? And, is there a layout to reduce flaring?  I'm just curious and just want to know for kicks...thanks

You're probably referencing Patrick Gerard's usage of an unusual layout that resembles a standard "full roller" layout closely...  I believe he was on staff with Brunswick at the time and they were trying to give him a different look on the lanes.

I know that some people that flare over their fingers excessively will tend to go with full roller layouts. Generally speaking, as far as layouts for full roller go, they are limited, but the further up along the track area towards the fingers you go with the pin, the weaker the layout is.

Benoit used the layout (different than the so-called Boomer layout) with Patrick to slow the ball down differently by inverting the flare. Full roller layouts (2) are about controlling the flare by avoiding the gripping holes.
