Getting the perfect grip...
« on: February 24, 2007, 05:50:52 AM »
What is everyones peronal method for getting the perfect fit for a ball?  I have gone through several span/pitch changes...took some ill-advised advice and went with a stretched span for a little while, etc.  I ended up with a few different pitches/spans throughout my equipment.  I have decided to start new and keep everything the same.

I am sold on a relaxed span (as proposed by Bill Taylor and Mo Pinel amongst others...).  When measured with a BT fitter, the mid-point between the two creases in my finger joints measures 4 5/16 by 4 7/16.  My thumb flexibility is just short of 90 degrees (maybe 80-85)... thumb is regular (not excessively dry or tacky)... Based on that span, BT suggests a reverse thumb pitch of (4 7/16 - 4 1/4) / 2... or about 3/32 reverse...with only average (or slightly less) flexibility in my thumb..add another 1/16 reverse to get a value of 5/32.  As far a lateral thumb pitch..I'm unsure of what's ideal for me (I'm rt handed).  I have used (in the past) anything between 1/4" left to 0.  The bottle test says I should be between 0 to 1/16" right lateral..but again, my thumb isn't all that flexible.

As far as finger pitches, the first joint of my middle finger can flex about 75-80 degrees (not quite perpendicular to my finger, when pressed, but almost), but my ring finger is quite a bit less flexible.. about 45-50 degrees tops.  Previously I had been using 3/8 reverse in my middle finger and 1/2 reverse in my ring.

Based on this description (or any other "tests" you may be able to give me), does it sound like I'm close?  I know its hard without actually seeing my hand, ect.  As far as trying another shop locally... that is how I ended up with the stretched span (found that the span to the first crease of my finger is 4 11/16"...LOL).

Best as I can tell without actually being able to read your hand, you're pretty close.  You might try 1/8 reverse for the MF instead of 3/8.  The 1/2 reverse for the RF should be good.  If you're using grips with lifts, add enough reverse to offset the built in forward in the grip.  I would suggest staying with a little left on the thumb, more room for error in that direction.  If you really want a good thumb release, oversize the hole by 1/32 and use a Magic Carpet.  Good luck.  --  JohnP
