Good layouts for control players and/or tourney bowlers?
« on: November 23, 2004, 05:13:53 AM »
Hey everyone,

I've worked a lot over the last couple of years to be able to crank the ball and open up the lane when necessary. Nevertheless, it still seems that playing straighter up the boards is and will always be my A game. To that end, I'm wondering what types of balls and layouts would best suit my game, especially for tournament conditions. I realize that "tournament conditions" can mean drastically different things depending upon lane surface, conditioner used, etc. So, let's just say that I'm trying to create an arsenal that would keep me in play on all of the PBA patterns. What types of balls and layouts should I use to cover my butt on those conditions? Now, here's the catch, I'm only willing to carry 6 balls. I don't have to use plastic for spares, however, so that frees up that spot. Here are my specs: 25 yrs old, above average speed (16-18 mph), slightly above average revs, but can turn it up when needed, high track, within 1-2" fingers. I can go deep and crank when needed, but I'm much more comfortable playing straighter lines. Here is my current arsenal and the conditions that I use them on:

Heaviest of the heavy: Track Animal
Heavy: DT Thing Lives
Medium Heavy: Hammer Vicious Particle Pearl (really just for opening up the lane)
Medium: Storm X-Factor Pro-overseas (XXX cover with original X-Factor core)
Medium Light: Fab Reaper 2
Scorched: Roto Sonic X Pearl

Let me know if you think I have any large gaps in there, and how you would set up these balls, or replace them with others, in order to keep me in play on the tour conditions. Any and all help and suggestions will be appreciated. If you need or want more info, let me know and I'll do my best to fill you in ASAP. Thanks!

quickly, cause I'm packing to go to Vegas for the Sr High Roller in the morning,..but one of the lay outs that I've fallen in love with is a 4 x 6, with the pin just outside the ring, and the cg on the mid line, I try and locate the Mb first and lay the ball out from there, kinda backwards,..I have this on 3 different balls,..a Pearl Vendetta, a Thing Lives,. and a new Crisis Pearl,...great control, great hit and great revs without a lot of jerking reactions...I used to think that opening the lane was the way to go,...but being consistant keeps the bad frames away,...
