Effect of CG placement question on pro-CG/pro-pin balls...
« on: April 30, 2008, 10:58:21 AM »
This came up in another thread, so here's my question:

Assuming you have a pro-CG or pro-pin ball with all markings accurate, why does it matter if the CG is very much to the left or very much to the right, or whether it's all the way around the ball? Legality of ending statics?

On a MB ball, I've been taught to ignore the CG, anyway, and go off pin and MB placement (aside from keeping ending statics USBC-legal).

However, I have a pro-pin Paradigm, where the pin is above the ring, the MB is in the strong position just inside the VAL and the CG is 11.5 inches around the ball from the pin.

I also have another Paradigm where everything is as it should be. The reaction of these two balls is significantly different. In fact, "significantly different" doesn't even communicate how different they are.

Why would this be the case if the CG was irrelevant?

Jess

the Pro CG balls allow you to put more exotic layouts on a ball without having a weight hole. The other thing I like about Pro CG is the I can put my CG close to my fingers which for me makes the ball come off my hand so much cleaner.

What if the way you want to fine tune the reaction with a weight hole doesn't work with the current statics?  You have a ball with the CG to the right of the line, but it's not a real long pin.  A "typical" strong layout would put the pin and MB about 4" from the PAP.  That CG placement means you have a lot of finger weight, but you don't want to put the weight hole in the positive finger quadrant.  You want a lower weight hole for some reason.

You're out of luck.  You have to put the weight hole high because that's what the CG location forces you to do.
