In 1967 or so I moved from a conventional to a semi-fingertip to ease the transition to full fingertip.  Turns out that the "semi" is what we would now call a relaxed fingertip.  Maybe 1/4" shorter than full fingertip.  At one point i used a stretched fingertip, but now I'm back to what was once called the "semi" or relaxed grip.

One difference being that the semi fingertip grip, the fingers were put in half way between the first and second knuckle and the relaxed fingertip grip the fingers are put in to the first knuckle the same as a stretched grip.

Avoid the stretched grip and you will avoid injuries.

Would this cause the thumb to come out sooner or later?

The funny thing about this question is that the thumb should come out slower with the shorter span because your hand is more relaxed  and locked into the ball because more forward pitch is used in the thumb, but since with a stretched span you have to squeeze the ball to hang on to it because of the reverse pitch in the thumb, your thumb actually comes out slower than with the relaxed grip.

The semi-fingertip grip was popular back during the days when the stretched fingertip was the norm.  Most bowlers I knew that used it had it drilled semi but then just put their fingertips in, resulting in essentially the same fit as today's relaxed fingertip fit.  If you use it as it's designed, inserting the fingers to between the joints, it can result in finger damage.  --  JohnP
