Grips VS NO grips.. Opinions please..
« on: January 10, 2005, 12:37:42 AM »
I am thinking about redrilling a ball and not using grips.

Anyone made this change? If so, what are the good/bad things I should think about..

I went to no grips and no thumb slug 3 years ago. I get a more consistant release now than I did then. One of the problems I had with grips was when they would wear, then the grip was a little big, etc. With no grips, you don't have to worry about the grip getting bigger, it will always be the same size. I item I did have to overcome was the loss of some lift on the ball. At the start, I was sort of dropping the ball, but now everything is fine and I actually have more loft now than ever.

I made the change over the summer and love it.  You have so much more room for adjustment with tape.  It is a lot easier than changing grips.  I noticed a tad (and i mean a tad) less revs without grips, but not much.  I have my holes drilled oval.  This takes time when drilling, but fits much better than round.  All in all, I am very happy gripless.  I just got a Rule that I am goingn to drill grippless and slugless.  THe only ball I have left with grips in it is my platic.  And I didn't feel like spending the money on it.  I prefer it with grips in it.  Hope this helps your decision.

I've been "gripless" for about 10 months now....and it's great.  I get a cleaner release which in turn gives me better revs and I throw better ball in general

I changed a few years ago.  The ball gets off my hand cleaner and you don't have different feels from ball to ball.  With Grips, they are always in different states of wear.

The size and shape of my fingers do not allow me to use a "no inserts" drilling. I tried it but did not fare well.

One thing to consider is the roundness, length of the end digit and the fat composition in your fingers.

I foyu are one of those average guys with no fat on your fingers or have longer digits, you'll be fine.

Doug,
Great points. I found this true also.
What I decided to do was "mill" my finger holes.
I measure the length, width and depth.
I then cut the holes with the smallest measurement and then will out the width.
This gave me the feel I was looking for and I get better revs and I feel it off my fingers a lot more.

I too have been playing around with no grips.  I have found that you have more flexibility (as far as making ovals in the fingers) than with using grips.  Because I had fairly "wide" fingers, I was forced to use 3/4" and 23/32" finger grips.  The were big on the top and bottom, but just right on the width.  Now without using grips, I drill 11/16" and 21/32" fingers... then oval the sides.  Fit is much better.  I have noticed some soreness in the tips of my fingers, but I'm sure once I get some callus built up, there will be no problems.  Another this I noticed was that after a couple games, any swelling (even a little) in the fingers causes the holes to become extremely tight... something to watch out for.  But all in all, I like the feel.  I probably lose a little revs, but it actually feels more "solid" to me.  Overall I would say just personal preference more than anything.

One thing that caused soreness for me was that my holes were too tight.  What I found to be more effective was to drill them a bit large and tape the top (nail side) of the hole for a snug fit.  This way, if I do swell, I can take tape out.  If you are having soreness on the nail side, it is usually due to the span being a touch to long or the pitch being a touch to much.

Hope this helps.

jkiser, i'd suggest you try it.  The worst that could happen is you don't like it and just put the grips back in.

For me, it has given me nothing but advantages.  I come out of the ball much more cleanly, and so i get more revs.  Plus, i don't have to worry about replacing grips every few months.  It will always feel the same.  Speaking of feel, i like the feel of the actual ball a lot more than the rubber on the grips.

I suggest you try it.  Unless you are unwilling to take the risk of losing the cost of a plug/redrill, there is no reason not to try it.

Hey jkiser01! Their are some great pros about no grips and slug. Consistent release and great feel........If you do it right. remember that if anything pinches then bevel more and when in doubt keep beveling. trust me if anything pinches it can lead to huge painful blisters. make sure the pitches are just right because if they aren't it could mislead you to believe that the ball is pinching your hand. Speaking from first hand experience, my hand looks horrible because I let some idiot who didn't know what he was doing experiment with my equipment. This might be something that you want to buy a cheap resin and experiment in practice with.

No grips right here! I love it. Feels a lot better then with grips. I do use a thumb slug though.

Although I don't use it I can agree with The Bowling Kid. No inserts but a thumb slug. The slug will help you get out easier and you shouldn't get caught up in the fingers anyway. I prefer no finger inserts as they only feel good for a week or so. Without them if the ball feels good when you get it, then it will feel the same a year later.

I've been gripless for two years now. I like it because of the fact that I can get out cleaner and easier. I continue to use slugs, because my thumb cannot take the friction, and the fact that all coverstocks are different... causes problems.
