Guess I got paid back......
« on: March 04, 2004, 08:42:53 AM »
I used my new Shock Zone in league Tuesday night for a game and a half.  Since then my wrist has been sore.  I thought maybe something was off in my shock zone.  I brought it in tonight and the span is 1/16th shorter than everything else.  That may or may not be what is causing my wrist to be sore.

I didn't drill this one for myself.  I picked it up from a shop in town for 100 bucks.  This is the guy who used to drill my equipment and this isn't the first time something has been off.

Paybacks are a bi+ch.

Andrew -- I can't believe 1/16 short in span would make your wrist sore.  Are you cupping more than normal?  --  JohnP

1/16th isn't even noticeable, really. However, if this driller got the span wrong, I'd check the pitches too. A 1/16th shorter span with, say, 1/8th difference in pitch could make a huge difference.

I was thinking the same thing.

I can give you a way to always make your spans different.

I'll drill with a Jonell, "Tru Span" span guage and you use one of those plastic span guages.  For me everytime the plastic shows 1/16 longer than the Tru pitch(note I have moderate reverse in my thumb and the span guage does not seem to be able compensate for that.

If Jonell says 4 11/16, plastic says 4 3/4.  Cool!

Oh yes it is noticeable. In fact I can even feel 1/32" difference in span and several others on this site can too as I've heard them talk about it.

Lefty is right. Every plastic span guage I've ever owned has been 1/16" longer than a Jonell or similiar guage.

First off, I have a relaxed span as it is.  I am also very, very picky about the feel of the ball.  Even if it is right ball for the condition I won't throw it if something feels off.  This may sound wierd but I will constantly release the ball differently if it doesn't feel right.

I was swinging the ball and turning it more on Tuesday than I have in quite some time.  I have been playing the lanes straighter lately but I was off on Tuesday so moved deep with a stronger ball.

I already feel old so I don't think thats it Phatdon...

We use the same measure tools as this driller.

agroves -- Please note that I didn't say you couldn't feel a 1/16 difference, but that I didn't believe it would make your wrist sore.  And I'll stick with that.

Regarding the Jonell vs plastic span guages, do I understand you to be saying that the Jonell is correct and the plastic is off?  I use a plastic guage, but I also measure the span from my measuring ball with the same guage.  Then I check the spans on my press (an old AMF 3600, a sidewinder) with the same guage, so the span I drill is the same as I measured, even if both are off 1/16.  And the same comparison is true if I duplicate a layout from an existing ball.  An error in the fit would occur only if someone told me to drill (for example) a 4 11/16 span and I measured it with a guage that was incorrect.  --  JohnP

JohnP--I think the soreness was caused by me turning the ball more than normal.  It didn't seem to bother me much today.  I didn't bowl league tonight b/c I have to big tournies the next two weekends.
