need drilling recomendation, a little stronger
« on: June 27, 2005, 01:47:41 PM »
I first am a cross between a cranker and a stroker, depending where I play and what the condition is. Either or, I decided long ago I HATE early drillings like 3/8 stacked, or 2" anything. I do though like strong balls with weaker layouts. My favorites seem to be ones with the CG near the PAP. So like 5" or 4" with the CG near the PAP with a balance hole of course.

Aside from a 3/8 x 5, which is strong yet controllable, I haven't found anything else I like but was thinking of something like 4" or 4 1/2" with the CG near the track. Or I've never tried 4x4 or 4 1/2 stacked. I'm looking for something basically that is a little stronger then 5", but I'm afraid putting the CG closer to the track I may get a dud reaction.

Brian, I drill a bunch of balls. I too like a strong, yet controlable reaction.
My pap is 4 5/8 x 3/4 up. I recently tried a new layout for me that has been surprisingly effective. I talked with my ball guru at Dynothane and we worked out this layout,..( I used this exclusively at Nationals ),...6 x 4 with the pin UNDER the finger holes. This puts the pin under my middle finger (basically) and with a 3"pin the cg under the ring finger on the mid line. Here's what I see with this drilling,.."and mind you this is for me,...others may vary"..
First of all the flare rings are narrowed,..instead of 5-6 inches of flare the width of the flare is about 2 to 2 1/2 inches. For me this keeps the ball from jumping off the dry outside or dry track when inside. The lower pin starts the ball up fast and early, which produces the revs and hit I want,...minor surface adjustments give me the lane read I want...
Balance holes can be used too,..I used a pap hole on one ball to give a little more arc ,...and a hole 3" below my pap in another for a little longer reaction and backend,... My biggest problem in the events I bowl is that the right side tracks up very quick,..and carry down. So far these layouts seem to help "me" combat that condition,..and keep the ball in play better...jime
