Getting that perfect thumbhole feel?
« on: July 04, 2006, 03:03:56 PM »
Well, after fighting with my pitch I think I've finally got it, thing is me and my driller are working to get the thumbhole right for my thumb(which is very odd, its mishaped because of all the bad techniques I had when I started). Very fat on the sides, nice little knot from knuckling when I was young, and I'm double jointed which for some stupid reason makes me want to hang at the base of the thumb. My thumb isn't actually that big though not measuring the width. So we decided to start small and work our way out til it feels good(1 to reduce tape use some seeing that I went through a 32 piece box in 4 days....) and to get a better overall fit to help reduce squeezing even more. Thing is if we start small and work it out....I have a bad feeling it's going to be really difficult to repeat that feel in another ball without switch grip or custom thumb molds...which I really don't have time or money for.

Any ideas for repeating that feel in multiple balls?

Have you tried a pre-made oval?
The best solution would be molded slugs though and they aren't any more expensive after the mold is made and they setup in about an hour.
I have been using a molded slugs for a while now and love them.

Well one must select the type of thumb they have.

Round, tapered, tapered from front to back, tapered from front to back but not on sides.  Oval.

If oval...I hate premade ovals...WHy ???  They sort of have a square corner in the mold of most.  I like a feeling of rounded transitions in the oval.

Found two possible solutions lately.

Both with the 10th frame vinyl insert.

The 10th frame vinyl insert is oval at one end or round at the top.

Well their round goes down into the oval and for some reason seems to be SORT of oval.  I find I must align oval in the bottom correctly and then I only need about 3 pieceds of tape total to convert their round to an oval feel with all the round blending of corners I need or almost!  On a regular round of the same dimension I need like 5 pieces of tape.

For a little more oval feel...I turn the insert off.  And cut on a premarked line the top of the oval off.(one is suppossed to only do that if using round end!!!)  This makes their insert the right length!

This oval...different from their rectangle feeling oval (if the top part is not clipped and the round is cut off.  IS too small...so I went to the next bigger size and repeated procedure and voila.  The squarish feeling oval...(also too big) after clipping off oval premarked line...creates a rounded blended oval of just the right size for me.  (Now only one piece of tape)  Of course proper bevel needs to be applied.  We've talked about that before!

I have not tested it and believe I still prefer tape to oval a roundish hole(10th frame) as it does not seem as critical to orient the oval at the perfect angle.  Tape allows one to properly orient your thumb oval angle in round! But it's not bad!
