Help, Rico drill gone wild!!!
« on: February 18, 2008, 05:48:52 AM »
Hey everyone!  I posted about possible drills for a 0-1 inch pin Secret Agent I had lying around about a month or so ago.  Well I got bored and put a Rico layout on it.  Much to my dismay my bowtie is basically in my middle finger and the last couple rings across my fingers.  Due to the pin being so close to the CG I only used a 7/8 inch drill bit and went down 1 3/4 of an inch to try and keep it statically positive weighted.  Does anybody have any advice such as using a bigger bit and going deeper or plugging the x-hole and moving it?  Any help would be great and thanks in advance.

Justin

Don't worry about being statically positive. I think you need to take out more weight with bigger hole,
but,
before that even, one of the conditions for a Rico is that if you have a highish "up" portion of your PAP, say, 5 1/4 x 1", you should put the pin not in the exact center of the grip, but "UP" by the same portion of the "up" portion of your PAP.  So if the above example were your PAP, you should have placed the pin 1" above the center of your grip.

BrunsRico is the expert on this drill. He's the final authority. I believe what I said above is correct, but he can correct it if needs be.

absolutely clueless, the more weight you take out with the hole, the earlier the ball will roll with less reaction on the backend. =:^D

Thanks for your input guys.  My "up" part of my pap is 1/16.  I will size the hole up and deeper and see how that works and let you know.  I appreciate your help.

But his concern was NOT the earliness of the roll, (One of the apparently desired effects of the Rico drill does seem to e to make the ball rev up and want to go into a roll earlier than a standard drilling.) but that the bowtie was thumping over the middle finger hole. So the help he needs/requested was, I believe, to move the bowtie. That size and location of the weight hole, as described by absolutebowling, generally helps to do that.

This increases the space between the flares and allows the ball to be used farther in the oil,
Excuse me, but doesn't increasing the space between the flare rings make the ball roll earlier..? If you're going to play farther in the oil, don't you need a ball that's going to roll earlier..?

No, not always

It depends on how deep your playing. If your ball is rolling to early, then you cant generate the necessary angle to carry well.

well don't listen to someone who wants the ball to roll early when you are playing inside.  That's when it's weak ten eight ten seven ten.  That person doesn't know about the physics behind bowling.  what Ric said is exactly right thats the reaction your looking for but it's flaring the way you dont want it to.  T-God Just go back to never moving from the 2nd arrow

Raven,
I had the same issue with a 1 inch pin Inferno.  My driller had to open after he first drilled it.  After that it rolled just fine.
